What Really Matters
It does not matter if you can climb 20 mile 24% grades in your 52x11 and spin that combo up the incline at 100rpm. It does not matter that your hometown amateur team trains at an average of 30mph over 60 mile routes 5x weekly with 8 miles of climbing (avg grade = 18%) in double-echelon pace lines with secret-coded in-team hand signals, and with riding etiquette that takes a lawyer to read. It does not matter that your average speed is 32.75 mph. It does not matter that your fastest downhill descent is 90mph. It does not matter that you climbed the Alpe-de-Huez 5 times in one day and your last time was faster than your first time. No - none of these BF proclaimations matter at all. I don't care. No one else cares.
What really matters is - who got the best deal on a bike purchase. Who paid the least for the most.
So - let's find out.
Criteria:
1) Must have saved in excess of $500. No one cares if your $1,800 typical LBS Trek bike only cost you $1,599. Big deal. Go read another thread. This thread is for heavyweights only.
2) For each $500 saved you get 1 point (we will argue the true value etc which will be half the fun of it).
3) You get extra points if you can PROVE your claims. Unlike the folks who brag about their cycling prowess on BF and are most likely 350 pound poseurs sitting in a dark room in front of their PC in full team kit typing, and eating Hershey candy bars at the same time - if you can prove your purchase (like a link to a Craiglist listing or an eBay auction link or an ad some other form of verifable data) you get 5 extra points.
Example: $3,999 retail carbon zoom zoom machine you got for a cool $1199. Savings = $2,800/500 = 5.6 points. If you have the eBay link that gets you another 5 points, so your total would be 10.6 points.
The winner is the person with most points. This is biased towards those who can prove a claim. We reserve the right to make fun of you and call you names if you post something stupid without a verification source and want to claim points. Lie you found a carbon Colnago in the neighbors trash that is worth $5,000 but you can't prove it. Expect to get a good razzing for something like that.
You don't get a prize or anything - just the acknowledgement that you sat on your PC responding to this thread instead of being outside riding that dream machine.

Percentages per-schmetages. I can make percentages dance and mean anything. This thread is for real red-blooded men and hard riding women who deal in how much cold hard cash did I save, how much beer can I drink, how many people did I sleep with on that one night in college (well, won't go there)...you get the picture. Cash Only. No Checks. No Credit. No PayPal. No % off MSRP.

Keep it up and I might make fun of you and make you wear full USPS Kit on your next around-the-block ride.

I paid $50 for my bike, put over 700 miles on that one so far, saved well over $500 in gas and expenses on my truck between my Raleigh Technium and my '72 Schwinn Super Sport.
I own two bikes, and with bikes and equipment, I'm at just over $350.... and over 1000 miles since I started riding again in May. Compare that with someone that paid $1500+ for a bike and has maybe 200 miles? I guess I saved a lot! (Sure wish I could afford one of those nice bikes, though.... *drool* )

Why put the first three options in the poll if saving less than $500 doesn't count?

Who the heck knows? Bought it 11 years ago, and didn't cost me much then.

'Cause the poll and the contest are separate - most folks probably save less than $500 hence the smaller poll increments.
Come on Team BF - show us your $$$savings$$ !!!

I only saved about $400 on the bike. But, I also bought a pair of shoes and two pairs of pedals and a pair of shorts at 25% off sale price (not MSRP) and they threw in a pair of PI socks, a cage and bottle, gave me 50% a bunch of 'accesories' stuff and yadda yadda. If I add up the MSRP of all the stuff I bought and subtract the actual price paid, I come out way over $500 off MSRP all told. It was all one transaction, right? But, you're only asking about the bike, though, so a measly $400.

I didn't buy my bicycle "retail" ... like he was some appliance in the clearance section of the local department store.

Bought a Trek 5200 last month. RRP $4,700AUD got it for $3,000AUD.
$1,700 is a good saving in my book.
