Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Facial Hair?

In watching Le Tour I notice a nearly complete lack of facial hair on any of the riders. Is this a bike-culture thing? Don't tell me they're worried about the extra drag of a mustache... Maybe they want to keep the face clean-shaven so when they slide to a stop on their faces it's easier to bandage.

its an old school cycling tradition thing. with the exception of some *****in' sideburns in the 70's (Merckx & DeVlaeminick for example) you rarely see it.

They're probably not worried about drag. Look at Valverde on day 1 covered in stubble. Apparently a superstitious thing.

I've been wondering about that. Seems to be an admission requirement to the 50+ crowd all over the country.

Or if you're drenched with sweat, it's simply a little cooler and more comfortable. I keep hair off on top for the same reason.

Dude, 40+.

As the hair falls of the top of your head, you have to grow an appropriate amount off the face.

Facial hair keeps the face warm on cold rides ha. The 5 a clock shadow look seems to work the best for me when I had a couple pictures done of me riding.

The drag didn't keep Dave from winning the national TT crown (before he slimmed it down to the present mustache only) . . .

Hahaha. Yeah that said, I tend to not shave before a long ride because I get nasty wind burn and skin irritation from it.

Garmin-Chipotle talks a lot about breaking from cycling's drug culture, but they are really doing much more to break free of cycling's facial hair traditions.

Is there any cultural norm concerning pubes?

Never mind.

I had to shave off my handle bar mustache, my descents went up to 55+ mph when I grew it, too much for me.

I think when you train at that level it burns up all the testosterone... hence no need to shave.
