Crank Brothers Eggbeater 1 not compatible with Shimano M162 shoes?

Hey guys, first post in the MTB forum. Today I received a pair of Crank Bros Eggbeater 1 pedals. After reading some great reviews, I was excited but bitterly disappointed. It turns out that my Shimano M162 shoes' soles will rub on the pedals' spindles when clipped in.

The pedals:

The cleat (right shoe):

When clipped in:

As you can see the sole is in contact with the pedal body. Is there any way to remedy this or am I just SOL?

They usually send a couple small plastic spacers that will lift the cleat off the shoe a little bit.

As with shooter, a couple of spacers should lift the shoe a bit.

Leave it to ZEPHchick to want to cut stuff up. I think she is a surgeon or something like that.

Is there a reason that the sole can't touch the body like that as long as clipping in and out isn't too hard? It looks in the picture like the shoe doesn't actually contact the spindle, only the pedal body which is stationary in relation to the shoe during pedaling unless I am missing something. I just want to make sure I won't damage anything when I get a new pair to replace my old style eggbeaters that are worn out.

No surgeon. I do dissect cadavers for school though. And I've modified shoes before. Modding shoes is more fun and doesn't smell as bad.

Yeah my bad, it's touching the pedal body, not the spindle. It bothers me since it makes clipping out less crisp compared to clipping out of my old Shimano SPD pedals.

Also, cutting the sole isn't doing much good...perhaps my knife is just a POS.

Shoes are made tough to endure. Maybe a small saw or a dremil would work.

I'd add another spacer or two, as long as enough threads remained on the bolts to adequately screw into each shoe.

Oh, derp why didn't I think of that. It works perfectly now, I just need two more of those spacers for the other shoe as I only received one pair of them.

Edit: Does anyone know where to buy the shims without buying the whole cleat set?

Try the LBS. They might have sets laying around (not every shoe needs them, so hopefully they keep these around for spares).

If you haven't found a pair already, send me a PM. I found a pair in my spare parts box that I don't need.
