Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Glad it works for him. It wouldn't for me. I'm not going to do TTs on my road bikes and I'm not going to climb mountains on my TT bikes. I wouldn't take any of them off-roading, the road bikes are not allowed on the track, and I wouldn't park any of them outside of a supermarket while I'm shopping. Just can't make it work with one.

.There is no ****ing way I can ride the singletrack I do with my mountain bike with a road bike, or even a cross bike. I need two at the bare minimum.

I can get by with one road bike if I was not riding mtb though.

I own only 4 bikes and most definately feel at least 3 are necessary: 1 for road races, one for gravel and training, and one mtb, and no the mtb is not good for training because it is unreliable and expensive compared to the training bike to maintain. This being said, my 4 bikes together are likely worth less than the guy who wrote the article's one.

Right! At the very minimum I need a trainer bike (i.e., rain and back-up bike), a folder and a tandem. And that's pushing it!

"A year later, here are the three biggest revelations he's had"

Seriously?

My biggest revelation would be that I sure miss having different bikes that are appropriate for different types of riding. It's like saying you only need one pair of shoes. Sure I could wear sneakers with a tuxedo or dress shoes to play tennis. It would just be stupid.

Which reminds me, I'd really like to find a nice folding bike, now that's something I could use!

Bicycling magazine is clearly not for anyone experienced. I thought it was getting better. But recently it had a feature story on riding using pot and explaining why walking inside with cleats isn't a good idea

Bully for that guy i guess --- i am a cyclist , - a MAMIL, if you will with a broad spectrum of interests

Road bike
mountain bike
downhill bike
Omnium style track bike

I could probably make a go at it with just 4 for a while, --- but what if i want to take another crack at the local BMX track? -- or take a slow cruise in my flip flops with my sweetie?
OR want a beater for rain days --- Now i am up to 7 that could be considered "essentials" - but what about the back up bikes , or buddy bikes? --- i never go on a run to downhill country without a spare machine because so much can go wrong -

All that justification can soon lead to a garage and attic that looks like this

YEs, i can get by with one bike........................ for every day of the month

He works at a bike shop. Probably tested countless bikes. Researches all the new gear and determined what bike and combination of components work for him. Good work dude. Now how many beard trim accessories does he have?

The author is pictured running on the beach with road cleats. Does it get any more absurd than that?

I am working hard to no longer be an overweight MAMIL ... by aging.

If I stay dedicated and keep motivated, before long I will be an fat old guy in spandex (FOGUS).

Seeing as how Bicycle is mostly a road biking magazine, I think it's safe to infer the article is specific to road/ gravel riding and that 1 primary road bike is going to serve most of their riders needs without having to purchase any of the multitude of other bikes the major manufactures would lead you to believe the recreational rider might need for different terrain.

I'm coming up on my 3rd anniversary of taking up cycling. Three bikes purchased over 3 years, that seems about right.

Sorry but you must have your epic endurance climbing bike, something that's easy to ride for 12 hours.
And of course your quick little snappy bike for group rides in town and for your interval workouts.
And for TTs, I'm sorry, clip-on aerobars are just a compromise. You've gotta have a TT bike because yes you can buy speed.

I guess you can show up at a work meeting with running shoes on, go running in leather dress shoes or find some shoes that are in the middle and do nether well. The question is why? Life is short and time off is of the essence. Endeavour to use your time well. There is no bad weather just bad gear. "Use the right tool for the job" relates to riding as well.

Don't get me wrong. I have some gear head friends that are in the bike a month club. More upgrades that riding up grades for sure. If you chose not to limit yourself to one riding discipline then don't limit your gear.

What would be the difference between the climbing bike and the "quick little snappy bike"? Not trying to be argumentative, but my C'Dale EVO seems to do both really well.

edit - there's only 3 reasons the author gives for only needing one bike, the only point I would disagree with is a cross bike would serve everyone well on a group ride.
