I've even been told by a bike mechanic you can use leaves, though hard to find in the desert, I imagine.

Joshua tree leaves might be a tad difficult to harvest
Or
maybe I could use the lid on the tire repair case
or road junk

You've got it all wrong. This is what you need:
One forty-five caliber automatic
Two boxes of ammunition
Four days' concentrated emergency rations
One drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine,
vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills
One miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible
One hundred dollars in rubles
One hundred dollars in gold
Nine packs of chewing gum
One issue of prophylactics
Three lipsticks
Three pair of nylon stockings.

In California there are areas where the cell phone will not work. When I was riding in Death Valley (Mojave Desert), it was very hot and no cell phone towers. Even driving to Furnace Creek was without towers.

Only thing I can add is that I carry some heavy 9 mil nitrile gloves and a rag. Also a few individual packs of wipes to clean off any grease that does make it past the gloves.

Did 43.5 mi today, (1000 palms/Dillon/ave 44 , Indio loop)
Had a tube onboard, it didn’t break the space or weight bank.
No leaves on today’s ride (Dillon rd)

At least there are farmers every few miles or so...probably not the case in the desert.
