Denver has a pretty nice "grid" of bike routes, that use low traffic side streets. even numbered routes travel in a general north-south and odds east-west (or maybe that's backwards). these usually have very few stops as well which is nice. the streets are marked with these small signs to let you know if the route changes directions or also when the route aligns with a major street these tell you when it's safe to "use sidewalk" or "crosswalk" and then guide you back to "use street" when it's safe. it's been very helpful as a new commuter. keeping on-route is so much more convenient than trying to explore randomly and finding yourself at stop signs every block. photos aren't mine btw I just googled them

Do you know who plans the routes? Do they seem to be wisely planned from a transportation cyclist's viewpoint?

seems to be a cooperative effort between cycling advocacy groups and the city officials.

History | BikeDenver

I don't know anyone involved personally. but I'd say they have done a terrific job. finding the bike-Denver map, after having made the trip to work based on google maps bike route, was big diference. i think it added maybe a mile, and technically backtracks a little, but the quality of the roads when i got on the cities route combined with less stop lights i'm actually making it in the same time or less

Thanks for the info. This pretty much matches my experiences with our local bike map: useful information compiled by smart and dedicated volunteers. Of course, at this point I have learned my city so well that I could probably make the map myself!

I found this one yesterday.

Oddly it doesn't say anything about cars, some of which would take up all of their lane plus half of mine.

And, I think it was only on the uphill direction, and not the downhill direction where the wannabe racers might be all over the road.

That's a horrible sign!

You should check on that. That sign would be against the law in many states, since bicyclists are legally permitted to "take the lane" either all the time or under certain circumstances. If the sign wrongly prohibits legal practices, it should be removed. You might want to post this on the A&S subforum to get their take on this.

That says nothing about "taking the lane".
It simply says not to take BOTH lanes, which I don't think is legal in any state.

In fact, that is the same road that has the Bikes may use full lane signs posted in a few places, as well as several "share the road" signs.

I'm a bit surprised about the walking on the right as it is frequently recommended to walk on the left facing traffic. However, it might be best for all walkers to be in the uphill lane as that is the lane where it is easiest for cars (and even bikes) to react to their presence.

Street signs are useless when people can't understand the language of the location or imagine a hidden horrible message in a clearly worded street sign.

+1

It actually gives peds and cyclists the freedom to ride 2-abreast if they want, as long as they fit in the lane.

I'm sorry, I thought it meant cyclists must stay right of center within the lane. I guess it meant to the right within the entire roadway. Sorry about my senior moment!

I don't see why it would be closed.

Your bike is equipped with one of these isn't it?

I wish we had some of these in north Dallas. We have bikes may use full lane signs all over the place, often in the same place as share the road signs, but that's it. And the share the road signs are still yellow! Like it's an option to yield to cyclists?! We yield to cars why shouldn't it be law for them to do the same?! Somebody needs to do something about this.

That's an odd way to interpret it......

Does this mean turning is an "option" too?

Yes, its a warning. They're warning you that you should slow down. You can either listen to it, or be an idiot and decide to see if you spin out this time

Now I'm wondering how if I should make something that mounts behind your bike with a camera and says: "You're on camera, don't be an as*hole." How do y'all think that would sell?

I found this one a couple of weeks ago.

If I remember right, when the crosswalk activated, the street was given a red light and this NO RIGHT ON RED sign turned on.

Once the crosswalk cycle finished, the street was given a turn light.

Here is another sign that I've encountered.

It is on the Rosa Parks / Pioneer Parkway bike path in Springfield, OR. They have them on both sides of every crosswalk.

I very much disagree with the signs, as you can see the cross street has a stop sign, and the traffic on the main road SHOULD stop for any lane they cross.

However, I will always yield any "rights" to a 3 ton piece of steel coming towards me on the bike.

And, if it reminds kids to look before crossing, all the better.
