Opinions needed: Peugeot PX10 Trophy Professional Team Hub (Maillard)

Hi,

I'm considering using a set or Peugeot PX10 Trophy Professional Team Hubs for a wheelset. French hubs are a little mysterious to me. Are these the equal of Campagnolo or Dura Ace high flange hubs? What freewheels will they take?

Same thing as a Maillard 700. Very nice hubs. They came in both English and French threaded versions, per Velo base.

VeloBase.com - Component: Maillard 700, Professional (large flange)

Yes, the high-end Maillard hubs are very nice. They may have metric thread (35mm x 1mm) rather than ISO/English (both were available from Maillard) so make sure you know what you're getting. Maillard also made a helicomatic version of their Professional hub, with the same high-quality polished races as the standard hub, but the smaller balls require more frequent attention than the standard hub, and helicomatic parts are somewhat scarce.

The 700/Trophy hubs are badge engineered. The cones are prone to damage due to overtight adjustment by previous owners. Two out of three used sets came to me that way. I replaced the cones with cones from a Shimano HF hub set and they are working fine. The races were minimally affected or damaged so I replaced the cones, added new Grade 25 ball bearings, greased them up and reassembled. Oh, count the spoke holes in the ad photos carefully. I bought a pair of 36 hole hubs from EBay France. The rear one was 40.

Yup, I agree with the soft cones issue. More than one set of Maillards has reached The Old Shed in not usable condition, thanks to pitted cones.

I think the 700s are usually pretty good, as they are the top of the line group from Maillard. But I have had (Trophy) similar or lesser model hubs from Maillard in the past that came from the factory with bearings adjusted too tight which quickly results in gravelly feeling bearings/races in quick time, if not caught soon enough and re-adjusted. The cheaper model Maillards (specially the ones with pressed steel races, were just usually rough (rumbly) feeling, no matter what adjustment and lubrication you give it.....
In general, Maillard hubs were never in the same league with campy Shimano and Suntour, wen it comes to smoothness at their bearings, out of the box......
