you can ride the beach cities century the week before to get those legs going...
Beach City Double / Century / Half Century
Beach City Double / Century / Half Century
I found it interesting they have "afternoon" routes? Who starts a century in the afternoon?

The afternoon century is a different route and follows the 2nd half of the double. It's there so you can ride with your friends who have just completed the 1st half of the double.

This is for extremely fast people then because a century for me takes more than a few hours. I need more time in day....and as pointed out...the traffic lights will make for a slog thru the city portions...

Yes, there are some people that are very fast but the majority are no faster than most of us. The afternoon century riders will start sometime before noon and have till midnight to complete their ride (over 12 hours) because the course is open till midnight for all rides.
The majority of the doubles riders will start a 4 AM or so (with lights and reflective clothing) and hope to finish before dark but there are always variables and you have to be prepared to ride well after it gets dark.

Yeah they lied and cut off the old email registration early. I don't have a new pass. Frankly wasn't planning to get one unless I just happen to be going thru O'side at the right time. I rode 5 in Amtrak last year, it was fine, wide shoulder, a bit noisy. But as a bonus you don't have to ride past the cesspool near Stuart Mesa/Vandegrift.

Not entirely correct.

are you going to do the double? I'd like to do a double one day but I don't think I'm in endurance shape anymore to do one or close to one.

I have virtually no interest in ever doing a double century-- just because of the absurd time commitment. With few exceptions, even the imperial century is a pain in the ass time-wise, taking basically the whole day. I did home to San Clemente, 102 miles, and including the train ride back and getting picked up from the train depot, I was gone for almost 11 hours. Even a loop century with few stops/breaks is at least 6 hours. The metric century is my jam. Under 4 hours, 90% of the time. Today was 73 miles in 3.5 hours.
In the ~3.5 years I've been on the bike,
Rides of 100+ miles: 11
Rides of 62-99 miles: 107

I'd be a tad concerned riding back from Queen Mary after dark thru LB...down PCH...thru HB etc.. on a Sat night... Just a tad more risk than I would be interested in.
I am going to follow to see how event goes since it is first time for this.

I "get" the double century thing. Chuck and the local group of DC Triple Crown riders seem like a fun crowd and I enjoy riding with them. And it's yet another significant goal to challenge yourself.
That said, I'm just not feeling it for myself. I did the double metric Cool Breeze a couple years ago. Had a great time and felt pretty good even at the end, albeit starting to get a few aches and pains. I could have kept going, but mentally I was ready to get off the bike and do something else.
Nice thing about bikes, there's all kinds of ways to do it.

You'll be with me so I'm sure your eagle eye will pick him out of the crowd that rides Santiago every Saturday 😂
