Thinking of going one bike, not anymore.
Went for a ride two days ago and hit a curb that gave me a pinch flat. No problem, have a brand new tube I just bought at WalMart sitting at home so I will throw that one on, patch my old and use that as my spare. Today I take the bike, new tube and all, out for a ride today and about 3.5 miles when it went flat. Turns out you get what you pay for in that WalMart tube as it has a manufactures defect and will be going back. Gave the flat a few pumps of my frame mounted pump and got home and decided to put on the patched tube and found the tube actually had two holes one of which I had missed. Put the wheel back on the one bike without a tube and took the other bike out and finished my ride. Thinking of going one bike, I don't think so.

Can't live with one bike if you plan on doing any serious amount of miles. I tried it for a couple of years, and stuff invariably happens. Spokes break, cables break, all manner of things go awry. Then it's either sit out and wait for parts/repair, or get another bike and always have a backup. For the past coupel of years, N=2 has been working out pretty well for me. Which is not to say I haven't been eyeballing some singlespeeds. Could maybe one day be N=3.

Think of it in terms of what you could sell your older bike for. What, $150? Maybe $200. Is it worth that or more to you to have it? I think it probably is.

I'm definitely a 2 (or more) bike kind of guy. Within the last couple of weeks I took out one of my road bikes and hit a patch of road debrisss to stay near the curb while a car was passing. There was a very small metal shard that cut my rear tire and tube. So with only a 14.4 mile ride in, I walked my bike home, grabbed another bike and the day was saved. I booted the tire and replaced the flatted tube during the evening when I don't ride.
Moral of the story? If I were a 1 bike kind of guy (which I'm not) I would have not have ridden 40 miles that day.
