ThinkThin or any energy bar/snack that substitutes sugar alcohols for sugar -- maltitol is most common. But it can cause some digestion problems with some folks. Gives me gas.
Without some form of sugar that can be converted to quick energy, they aren't really energy bars. Protein, vitamins, electrolytes, more complex carbs, etc., sure. But the sugar or sugar alcohols give a quick burst to prevent or alleviate bonks from low blood sugar.
Traditionally, rice cakes were among the earliest "energy bars" for cyclists. I see 'em often at the dollar store. They use just enough sweet stuff to stick the popped rice together so it's easy to handle while riding.

Never heard of Swedish fish candy before. Now I must try this. I hope it tastes like sugary lutefisk.

Ah, I can't do stick-to-the-teeth. I lost a molar cap and cracked another tooth on Kind bars, between the sticky and crunchy. More like Unkind bars. All the flavor and texture of gravel.

I make real food at home or go out now and then. The only candy bar I dig is a Hershey.

Clif Peanut Toffee Buzz. A Clif bar with a cup of joe worth of caffeine.
I also carry a bag of Skittles in case I need a quicker sugar boost.

Put me down for Team Fig Newtons. Pretty close to the same nutritional value as expensive bars, available in most convenience stores (here in the US, at least) for under $1US.
I've noticed that the rest stops at many organized rides around here have moved to pre-packed peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that are better than they look. Kinda like PBJ burritos or calzones in plastic bags - I think they are available in vending machines.

I like M&Ms. I swallow them whole to keep from getting the sugar on my teeth and it slows down the release of the sugar.

actually pretty decent, throw them in a jersey pocket frozen and they'll be thawed out by lunch

There are so many recommendations for Clif Bars in this thread I got one at a store today to see if they have changed in the last 20 years. Nope, still have the consistency and palatability of compressed sawdust and wood shavings with some fruit flavoring mixed in. I'm usually riding in suburbia, so I just usually stop somewhere for a cheeseburger.

I rode 12 1/2 miles, ate a burrito and rode 12 1/2 miles back last night after work, does that count? It was sort of bar shaped.

Yeahhhhhhh, that's my recollection as well. But damn! --there are a lot of people still eating them, at least on this list. I was surprised to see how popular they are.
.....I'm going to the grocery this weekend and pick up one or two, just for old times' sake. See if they've changed.

The winner! in the packaged category, but fresh fruit is better yet.
Clif bars are ok..but like many bars they are very pricey for what they are. Not that I can't afford them, I just refuse to go for (be taken by) that ride.
The blueberry thingys from Costco sound interesting though..

I did the entire AT on Clif Bars and giant-sized Paydays and Snickers. The Paydays and Snickers were tastier, provided more energy, and were cheaper to boot. These days I'm into the salty Clif bars, and Justin's Maple Almond Butter packets.
