Delta Air Lines is making it cheaper to travel with bikes, surfboards and other large sports gear.
The airline is eliminating its $150 specialty sports bag fee, copying a move American Airlines made earlier this year.
Travelers will now pay standard Delta baggage fees for sporting equipment as long as it meets weight and size requirements. Delta charges $30 each way for the first checked bag and $40for the second.
elta's new policy takes effect for tickets purchased on or after July 17, meaning summer vacationers still face the higher fees unless they bought tickets last minute.
Alaska Airlines was the first carrier to eliminate oversize sports equipment fees in 2017. United Airlines eliminated its $150-$200 surfboard fee in 2018, but only on nonstop flights to and from California.

DAMN !!! I wish they'd have done this a few years back !!! I took it in the pants with these damn fees, more times than i can recall........for years !!!!!

If you exceed the 50 lb. limit you will be charged more. My large CrateWorks plastic box weighs 22 lbs. Unless I’m doing a supported ride with my road bike I’ll continue to shifp.

And for that decade and a half that I lived and worked down there, Mexico basically was my country. I gradually bought and/or built nicer, better bikes, so I'd sell the old one and bring down the new one.Lather,rinse,repeat.
Then the airlines would jab me for a C-note, when often my other bag was just a carry-on, which I always thought was exorbitant, sine the main reason is so they can have the spare room for hauling freight. IMO, the primary focus should be on the passengers, rather than their sideline freight operation, leaving us as an afterthought.

You can't change the past. Be happy they changed it now and did not double rates.

My mtn.bike often used to fly free. Hit a limb wrong, take a drop wrong, and there it went, flying completely free of me!

So, I can't comment about being annoyed that the airlines stuck me for a bunch of extra fees for me to fly with my bike......in a thread about the airline's bike shipping fees ???

I ask again. Why are you complaining yet again about a problem that can't be fixed in the past but is now fixed?
And the airlines didn't "stick" you with anything. You chose to use their service. Your choice was don't fly with your bike or simply don't fly at all. Of course it was unfair since the combined weight of most cyclists combined with their bikes are less then the weight of the many passengers alone but that is the way it was, I am just happy now there are at least two more US airlines with reasonable bike fees. I hope it sticks around for a while and spreads to the rest of the carriers.
