brockd15 - That looks like a lovely example - I just hope that whomever got it appreciates it for what it is, and understands why it became such a popular classic.

Regarding the painted fork, thanks for noticing. -(I was sort of proud of myself for getting the antique white perfectly matched. )
- Good point on the lining. - Right now though I think I'll focus on the TT decals instead -(everything else on the bike is looking better.)

Auchen,
I love the white Gazelle built GP, looks awesome.

Has anyone ever seen an E, M, D or H code GP? I have an H coded Sprite frame.

My 1977 Super Grand Prix, As found.

And as it is now, YES the fork is bent but after some reading here I'll be trying some straightening techniques in the spring and since discovering Cyclomondo I'm planning a repaint and proper decals to replace my home made vinyl decal set.

And a project Holland built Grand Prix that I'll be doing in the spring as well,

And this poor frame I pulled from a dumpster, not sure what I'll do with it yet.

Steve,

Interesting in that your Super does not have wrap-over stays. I have never had a SGP myself, what's the plant code in the serial?

Here's my '74 Grand Prix. I picked it up this summer and have had little time to do much with it. Hopefully I'll have time to clean it up and fix a few things on it before spring. It has a real nice ride.

My Super Grand Prix is Japanese built and I've not had much luck deciphering the serial number but here it is.

I'd wager she's newer than a '77 then, probably '82 or later. I've never heard of a GP built in Japan pre '81.

I seem to have a knack for finding hard to date bikes but from what guys on the Raleigh forums said and looking at another owners blog I'm pretty well set on the 1977 date since the original paint doesn't match anything I can find on the Headbadge site and of course they're missing 1977.

Here's the blog of a guy that says he's owned his '77 SGP since new and it's a virtual twin to mine.

Steve,

You've got a real odd one then, there was no SGP listed in the '77 Catalog. (I have one).

Here is the regular GP from my '77 catalog, I scanned the entire thing and Kurt has it online.

Yeah, like I said, I find the odd ones.

Mine did have a "Made in Japan" decal on it but I have not found a database for the Japanese serial numbers. I'd love it if anyone could figure out what it really is.

Maybe I'll start a thread and ask for help.

I just bought an '81 Grand Prix off of a motorcycle dealer's showroom floor..I'm the first owner!! I'm not going to say how much I paid for it. Other than the brake cables/housings not being connected or missing completely, the bike is in perfect, showroom, mint, new old stock condition. I'm blown away that something this pretty could sit on the floor for 30 years.

Hi,

I am a newbie to Raleigh Grand Prix and was curious about the serial number on the bottom bracket of mine. I know it's Workshop (Carlton) made in October 1979. What I am not sure of is the extra S stamped sideways right in the center of the bracket below the actual serial number? What does the S stand for?

Hi soopercat -
and Welcome to C&V.
You have resurrected an old, but terrific Grand Prix thread here.

- I don't know what the "S" means though -

I can only guess that its something to indicate which path it took in production or inspection. (I often see letters or numbers that are extraneous to the S/N on bottom bracket shells on other marques too, and have wondered what they mean myself.)

In bumping this thread, perhaps someone else can answer definitively.

I'm starting to wonder if someone at Raleigh (U.S.) Didn't take some initiative in the mid to late 70's and import and badge engineer a few (?) decent mid level bikes of Japanese manufacture as "Super" Grand Prix's before the concept ever reached Nottingham.

It's not too far outside the realm of reality The Rampar line, if I recall correctly was initiated by the American division in the 70's. And an outsourced Super Grand Prix along those same lines would require little more than head badges and a set of decals.

They all seem to be tall frames, (Those I have seen) and all in the same color scheme.

Hi,

The Grand Prix I am talking about is Gold in color and is a 53 cm frame nothing tall like the bikes above.

This is as purchased not it's present look. I am working on it over the rest of the winter.

Soopercat,

Yours is a pretty standard '79 Grand Prix. I'm a bit surprised that it's coded "WA" and not NA (Nottingham) or RA (Canada). Looks like a fun project!

What an epic thread. Totally missed this back when I still had my Grand Prix.

For posterity sake, here's my standard Worksop 78 Grand Prix:

Sold it a while back, but 'twas a great bike.

I found the vinyl Brooks CR-3 actually surprisingly comfy.

I may have made a mistake, it reads WN9002029 with and S stamped vertically below the 00 in the middle of the number. It is going to be interesting sans the 26 vs 24 thread issue as I know it's all 24. I've stripped the paint and have a new bottom, starting to figure out next steps.

On second look, you have bar end shifters, and it looks like it says "Super Grand Prix" on the top tube, which might explain it's Carlton heritage.

The headset is 24tpi?

Yes, both the bottom bracket and headset are 24pi. It did say Super Grand Prix but that went with the goo gone in the first step of stripping it along with some mild rust. I switched out all the potential problem parts with know 24pi threaded parts and they went on and off without a hitch no binding or cross threading of any kind.
