Hey, just how wide are those handlebars? The stock bars on my '81 912 are about 40cm, which seems incredibly tiny given the larger frame size. (And larger rider.)

It had 126 spacing to begin with. Not hard to spread the stays 4mm by hand to accomodate.

I have used the Jobst Brandt method for spreading a fork back into alignment (put it on the floor, put your foot up near the crown, pull REALLY hard, pant and repeat... 45 minutes to move 11mm!)

OK, how about a little Hybrid action
I found this at a yard sale. They had three bikes, a new Magna, a recent Roadmaster and an old, filthy Miyata, Street Runner early (around 1984) Hybrid. I asked if they were selling any bikes. The lady running the sale said yes, but just one. I held my breath until she pointed to the Miyata. I had to bite my tongue to keep from smiling too broadly as I negotiated the price. As shown here, I've simply cleaned the frame and rims. The frame is chromoly and its lugged. The dropouts are horizontal. I'm planning to flip it and I'll bet a fixie type buys it.

Miyata 914SE - right after maiden voyage. Only rode 17 miles 'cause it's still kind of cold, and the gearing doesn't yet match my fitness level to allow me to ride too far Anyhow, I do like it. Much better than my entry level aluminum bike (Giant OCR2) and racier geometry (at least for now) than my Look 555.

My wifes' bike. It is 80's something. I upgraded it to 6 speed indexed, took off all the steel, (wheels, cranks,chainrings, stem and bars) and replaced with alloy. I think the bike shed about 10lbs. well maybe 5 or 6. She loves it. Also put on grip shifters and the Blumel fenders and red dustcaps for a bit of bling.

If it isnt too much trouble, I would be very interested in a couple of pics of the two (or three) of these I have highlighted....I'm looking to replace a Trailrunner that was stolen 6 years ago (Before I thought about Vintage and bicycles in the same sentence) I think it was a 91,but I've had a crazy time just finding a pic of the dang thing....It was "Bonded" 22.5" tall had strange lookin lugs,a hinge bolt at the top of the seatstays, and was VERY PURPLE!!!! I see that they used a color called "Plum Crazy" in 91. Thanks!!

Fascinating - I was just looking at a Miyata that had a bolt through the top of the seat stays. I thought the welds must have given out and it was repaired that way, but it was very well done. Now that you mention this I'm starting to think maybe the frame was made that way. Was this a common feature on Miyata frames?

Neal, my '87 512 almost has that paint scheme. No fade, just the yellow headtube and fork and that very cool dark metallic blue/grey.
I'm hoping that Dr Deltron can reproduce it on my Ironman.

There is an '84 610 not quite that tall out in the shop. It was given to me free by another C&V member (OK, I bought lunch). I'd pass it on (less pedals) to another C&V member for shipping, under the condition that it be kept and ridden and not flipped.
I thought I had a new owner for this bike, but it fell through. I do hate to see these things sit idle.

The bikes you're highlighting are lugged steel and welded alloy. What you describe sounds more like this =>



This bike had carbon tubing in the front triangle and a steel tail. Fronts came also in aluminium and rear triangles in carbon and aluminium.

Roughly there were two generations of bonded Miyata mountainbike frames. Below pic showing both =>



The one in the foreground is earlier (89, 90, 91). The other is introduced in 1992 and 1995 was the final year.

More into detail: The one in the foreground is a full aluminium frame. It is form 1991. The year can be derived by that compared to the 1990 year it has tapered stays, top tube cable routing, oversize headlug, shaved down bb lug with integrated chainsuck teeth.

The TiRunner in the background uses titanium tubing for front and rear triangle. It is of the 1993 year. Typical for the 1993 year is the long headtube for this particular size.

The 2nd generation frame is more svelte looking, is actually lighter and has a monostay with integreted cable guides. Both frames use a bonded and bolted construction.

Depending on the standover height on that bike I would really like to take you up on that offer. I've been looking for a Miyata for a while now and keep getting beaten out on auctions. You can be assured that I would ride it OFTEN since I bicycle commute 5 days a week

Thats It!!! Mine was all aluminum, Said just "Miyata" on the downtube, and "Trailrunner" on the toptube (In White)and was the same Purple that Chrysler painted some early 70's Factory Hotrods (Plum Crazy) Thanks!!

Your Trailrunner is ~'90. Miyata made it in two colors, Black/silver and purple. It had an aluminum main triangle with bonded aluminum lugs and a chromoly rear triangle with a chromoly fork. Equiptment was Shimano LX.

My brother owns a purple one and I have an ultra-rare 1 of 5 two-tone green/white. Miyata USA had 5 Trialrunners, one in each size, made with home market Japanese paint/decal schemes to test the U.S. market. I bought the only 18" and was givien the only Japanese catalog in the U.S. at the time that denoted the color and decal scheme. I still own the bike but sadly enough I think mom tossed the catalog.
