FD not shifting

I was riding my bike in the snow, salt and ice today. The FD (tiagra 4700) shifted very well when I was riding to my music school.
When I was riding home the FD did not want to shift to the big ring. I decided to replace the cable and now the FD is shifting fine.

What could be causing the shifting issue? Broken inline barrel adjuster? Cable slipping at the cable fixing bolt?

Perhaps water got into the housing and froze?

It might but I manually got the FD to shift up to the big ring and it was rubbing in all the gears indicating not enough cable tension.

Jeez, you're the one who pulled out the old cable and replaced it. Did you find anything wrong with it? You're the one who made it work again. What did you do? I think you already have your answer but might not be seeing it.

Ice is a intermittent problem. It comes and goes with exposure and temperature. It can freeze up cables, pivots and jam moving mechanisms but then magically "fix it's self". At the moment this is frustrating but in the long term the entry of the salt will become the greater issue.

Most of my professional life has been in the Rust Belt and most who winter commute, that I deal with at the shop, end up with a beater bike which might only last a few seasons before the salt eats it up too much for worthy rehab. Andy

Funny use of tenses. Confused?

I replaced the cable because the old one was badly frayed at the pinch bolt. There was no rust on the old cable and the cable was smooth. It seems to me that the FD lost so much cable tension that it did shift to the big ring cause I got it to shift when I pushed the FD over with my hand. It stayed on the big ring but was rubbing on all the gears.

This is firth winter I'm riding and the first time FD is falling on my during a ride. I clean my bike at least once a week during the winter and rinse the salt off everyday. I now that I might have to replace some parts in spring do to the harsh winter conditions so I try to keep my bike well maintained to minimize it.
