Do you make your own bike parts?
Not sure if I would spend time making a shifter but this seems pretty cool. Apparently, you can make your own bike parts with a bike 3d printing machine.

I would love to make a proper new frame for my bike or heck even design one from scratch. Has anyone dabbled into this before? I use to love watching 'American Choppers' etc. I'm not a tech savvy individual but definitely willing to learn (Man these bikes / parts are getting pricey. Especially in Vancouver).

If you want to play around with frame design, Bikecad, www.bikecad.ca | Bicycle Design Software, offers a free online version. I used it for my upcoming bamboo build. It runs on Java, so make sure your version is up to date and your permissions are properly set. There are links on the page on how to check this. There are also some small parts listed on Shapeways. I've got as technology teacher friend that raves about his 3d printer lab. If you've got the time and inclination all things are possible.

I made a few steel frames a few decades ago, not 3D printing though. Old school files and torches.

It's one thing to make a friction shifter with 3D printing. Heck, you could make one out of wood or household garbage, really.
No way in hell am I throwing a leg over a 3D printed frame, though.

Make? No. I will bend stays on rear racks, etc., to make them fit right.

My rear rack wasn't long enough to keep my 700c wheels from water and mud slinging a line up my back so I made a "mud flap extender" out of the bottom of a plastic gallon milk jug. That was 15 years ago and it still is holding up just fine !

Down in the basement of the Chemical Engineering building at Cornell University is the machinist who is a local bike legend. He can and does make bike parts, but not always.

I've made a couple of things that I wanted using my 3D printer. Next up is getting the printer working using nylon, then I think I might be able to make very strong parts for more important applications. Currently just using ABS, though I'm sure ABS would be fine for that shifter. Just don't use PLA, it's too brittle.

Friction shifter is pretty cool, sounds like it is plenty durable, but if not, just print another!
Even cooler though is this design from the same guy. I wonder if he invented that completely himself, or just copied an existing product.
