goals - this is tough for me. my partner's an academic and on the job market so quite frankly i don't know where we'll be living in 6 months. it makes it hard to plan a season, and i'm emotional about it.

at the end of last season - after a season being a guy with a full time job racing mostly against full-time athletes - i decided that what i really wanted to do was race elite races at tracks i've never been to before. spend some more time getting hammered at TTown, but also focus on gaining new experiences in fields where i'm more likely to be in the top five.

we'll see what this actually looks like in practice.

in the mean time i suppose there will be a spring crit season i can **** with, and i've definitely been getting stronger in that regard - so my goal is to break some hearts.

i managed to stay fit through the fall, and though i've been largely off the bike for a few weeks what with the cold and the darkness, my weight training has been on point. i'm about to PR the squat, and i keep on adding weight to the dead and am likely to PR in a month or so if things keep going like they're going. so that's satisfying.

Actually ride on a track.

I'm in the prep and information gathering phase right now -- gearing up, altering my training routines, diet, going to the gym, reading, reading, reading, watching, asking, etc.

Sadly, Boise, Idaho does not have a velodrome. There were plans at one point in time to build one, but they ran out of funds and/or the funds were used for something else. I'm a road cyclist/time trialist, and registration rates are declining here year after year. Road cycling is a dying sport. Just last year alone, several regional races were canceled due to lack of fund and/or low registration rates (e.g., Walla Walla stage race). I think the best thing we could do for the sport is build a velodrome. It's a captive audience where everyone can see the whole race all at once, vs. driving out in the middle of the desert to watch the beginning and end of a road race/TT...and it's exciting and fast paced..lots of formats. Damn, I wish we had one here.

In the meantime, I will taking many roadtrips to the Jerry Baker Velodrome in Portland, OR, and the Aspenrose Velodrome in Seattle, WA. I hope to get to the Colorado Springs Velodrome once next season as well, and San Jose, CA is about a 14 hour drive.

1. Officiate at the Junior & Masters Track Nationals.
2. Get back in shape enough to do a couple of late season track races.

Congrats!! Keep the momentum rolling!

Try to go as often as you can, even to watch. You learn a lot even if you aren't on the bike.

Thanks, I intend to

Have a three hour session booked for this Sunday and several more scheduled in the coming weeks. I am finding that I'm learning something every time I get on the track. This year is really just about getting in as much track time as possible with a view to maybe dipping into the winter track league at the end of the year.

The stars have finally aligned, I’m off work and the Mrs is off work meaning I can realise one of my 2018 goals and actually go racing on Wednesday!

First timer racing on the boards so hoping just to stay safe, no clue what the level will be like (I’ve quite rightly entered the Uber beginners), Cat2 on the road (not a good one ) although I’ve not ridden outside since September and I’ve not done much training away from Sweetspot Really looking forward to it!!

Scottish track league?

As new to track you'll likely be in with D group so with a fair number of youths. Despite their age they are experienced and while you will have a power advantage it wont be easy particularly in races like the elimination. As a Cat2 you could probably request to join the C group on the night - I suspect you'd cope fine there fitness wise and maybe even find it a bit easier than the D group.

Anyway have fun. I started about 5 years ago and still learning - just wish the velodrome had been about when i was 13 or 14!

Thanks guys!

Yeah Scottish League, I’ve been put in C, I entered “new to track racing”, I’m just there for the experience so happy to be entered/racing either way!

Making the wrong gear choice right now
