What you all have said, plus: Stopping by the grocery store to get a couple of things. We don't run out of stuff as often and bananas brought home via bike taste better.

I'm the only person at my job who bikes to work so I love the "oh my god you bike HOW far?" factor. Passing traffic jams even keeping up with traffic (speed limit is only 30mph in parts).

I live in a little town in Kansas, only place to buy a bike is Schwag-Mart,I work a second shift in a balloon factory running a pair of presses that run at 400+ degrees...so on hot days the ride home when it is much cooler is my fave,And the looks from All the folk who have NEVER seen a bike with Hyd. In addition to not having to sit in a smelly cab (my only realistic alternative), I just like the way you see things on a bike that you wouldn't notice in a car.

So how bad do the cabs smell in China? I've been on some public buses in Boston that curled my nose hairs and ruined the soles of my shoes. But the cabs smelled about the same as my uncles car (smoker but otherwise clean person).

Yup, the reaction from non-cyclists when they ask me how far I ride my bike in (my response: 6 miles) is priceless. They all act like I'm superhuman or something, when I actually have a super-easy setup for bike commuting -- great route through small neighborhoods and a local university (w/ streets closed off to regular cars), ability to park my bike indoors next to my cube, company fitness center w/ showers and spin classes on the first floor of the building...

Riding my bike changes the commute from boredom into fun. And there aren't too many days when I say "I'm having too much fun. I've got to cut back on this fun nonsense and get some more drudgery into my life."

Effortless weight loss. Eventually it will be eating like and pig and not looking like one.

The hills - They are hard, and still beating me - but I am chipping away at them.

The admiration from the Ticos - here is one Gringo not attached to the seat of a car. Granted, my bike is worth more than most cars here - but still - it is human powered.

Love riding, recreational or other.

I love acting 'properly' on the road in amongst all the traffic, ie, not jumping curbs, etc. to get ahead - my route takes me on a bunch of cycle lanes, so I get to shoot past traffic anyway. I have a vain hope my example will encourage other cyclists to act courteous/proper on the road.

I don't ride for the health reasons really, but that's a definite bonus :-)

Someone else said it as well, coming down the hills in the morning and up them in the afternoon ride back

I also love the freedom my journey home provides, in the morning I ride to work. On the way back home, I usually take a break and stop off somewhere (a park, by the lake, a beach) - I love that freedom.

Being able to say I can get to work faster than I could previously using city transit.. :-) (more direct route on the bike).

I love riding my bike. And since I have two kids and a full-time (some parts of the year, more than full-time) job, I'd only be able to ride on the weekends if I didn't commute.

Complete independence from: traffic, Metro delays, etc.
Increased fitness (commuting is my primary cardio workout).
Saves money.
Saves the environment (car often sits for the entire week).
Non biking admirers.
Biking admirers.
Being more in tune with what's going on around me.
Feeling alive when I get to work as opposed to the run down, tired feeling after having ridden Metro.
Connectideness with other commuters.
Converting people to this way of life (2 1/2 so far...).
Having a great excuse to constantly upgrade bike (s).
Satisfaction of wrenching own bike (s).
Sense of exploration on way to/from work.
It seems to go on and on........

Things I like:

1) Fresh air
2) The wind in my face
3) The feeling of freedom
4) The obvious health benefits
5) The saved gas money

My favorite thing:

The two turtles that I see almost everyday swimming in the creek along my commute.

When I started commuting 32 miles round trip on a mostly wooded r2t 11 months ago, I would have said, the gas money I'm saving. Three months later, I'd have said the blood pressure meds the doc told me I didn't need any more. Another three months, and I'd have said the 20 pounds I lost. It's still all those things, of course, and dozens more, but the most consistently satisfying is getting to work invigorated and asking co-workers who drove ten minutes to work and still barely made it on time, "How are you?" and hearing them moan, "I'm here"--then telling them, "Better all the time" when they ask how I'm doing.

1. Riding through the remains of a dead pigeon.
2. See #1, replace "pigeon" with "rat"
3. The occasional near-death experiences

Most aren't so bad, but occasionally you'll get one that smells like feet that haven't been washed in years. And sometimes there undefinable smells much worse than that

At least if the drivers decide to light up they'll sometimes offer you a cigarette first. Not that I smoke (and I ask them not to, too), but I appreciate the gesture.
