Returning to the Sport

Hi, I'm CaliRocketFuel.

I am a former avid cyclist who hasn't really been on any significant ride in the last 4 years. Now 60 lbs heavier and with a 9-month old son, I have been trying to ride indoors to get back into cycling unsuccessfully. I just don't have the motivation. Hence, over the past week I've been readying my bike and gear so I can ride outdoors. It's been pretty cold here for me, but I plan to at least do some sort of ride tomorrow morning.

My name is a reference to the pharmaceutical combination of venlafaxine and mirtazapine, nicknamed 'California rocket fuel' due to its supposed efficacy in treating depression resistant to other treatments. Struggling with mental health has always been something I've dealt with, and cycling really was a sort of antidote for a long time, and things got a lot worse for me when I stopped.

Best regards.

Cycling does wonders for the soul. Thank you for opening up not only to us but to yourself and getting back on the bike!

I'm from NorCal. Love my Cali.

Yes, there’s nothing better for mental well being than aerobic exercise. Cycling tops that list. Everyday out makes you feel like a happy kid again.

Hi,
Getting back to bike riding myself. Last I rode was in the 90s. You know what helped me ride almost everyday? Play 80s and 90s hits. Remind yourself of your younger days!
Look at all the gadgets for bikes they have now!!! The GPS, the cool bike lights, the heart rate counter, smart watches, and the INFORMATION on the internet you can find today! Hope you have a great time like I am having now! All people here will help you out. I am sure of it! One newbie to another. Greetings!

Thank you all for the kind words and encouragement. I did go on my first ride; just 9 miles but it was nice being back on the bike again.

Indoor riding is tough - where are you from? When will you be able to hit the open road again?

From the Phoenix Metro area... Cycling year-round is possible here. It's just been cold and dreary for me. We're having a wetter winter than what I remember is normal. I have limited cycling gear that (1) actually fits me, and (2) allows me to ride in adverse or cold weather. I did make it out for a 32.5 mile ride last weekend. Main complaint is that my butt hurts.
