Upgrade to cartridge BB, cable guide

I have a 1989 Schwinn 564 that I’m rebuilding. I replaced the loose bearing bottom bracket with a sealed cartridge type.

My problem is the cartridge wouldn’t slide in because there is a derailleur cable guide is under the BB, and it’s held in place by a plastic nub that pushes into the bottom bracket housing.

Any ideas how to keep that cable guide in place? I thought about some kind of epoxy. Or will the tension from the cables hold it in place?

But clean it, and the frame first to get good adhesion.

Thanks for the advice, and the reminder to clean the frame too. I will see what kind of glue I an find for it, maybe some J.B. Weld.

Alternately, you could drill it out and use a bolt from inside the BB shell to a nyloc nut on the outside.

Tap the hole and use a short (~1/4”) round-head screw to hold the guide in place. That’s all my Litespeed has, and it’s been good for 20 years

Dremel+Loctite

Dremel off only the part of the stalk that protrudes into the BB shell, leaving the rest of it to anchor the guide. Clean the guide and your frame thoroughly, then stick it on with some Loctite. That way, you'll be able to remove it if needed.

More great suggestions, thanks everyone.

I went with ThermionicScott's method of drilling out the plastic in the cable guide and running a bold from the inside out.

+1 this. Once the cables are installed, the guide won't fall off; you just need a little adhesive to prevent it from sliding around.

All good ideas here. I think I like using a bolt from the inside is probably the best. Use nylon or stainless, though.

One tip to share about cartridge BBs: use some plumber's tape on the treads before you install it. Gives you a waterproof seal and prevents creaking.

nothing against tape, if it helps prevent creaking or the BB from becoming loose, but a waterproof seal really isn’t critical. Water is inevitably going to get into the BB, either through the threads, down the seat tube from the saddle clamp, or through magic. The critical thing is that there’s a way for the water to get out. BBs are ruined and frames rusted not by water getting in, but by standing water. Make sure that there’s a drain hole of some sort in the BB shell.

It gets in through condensation. The tape keeps the water out of the threads, especially important for those of us with aluminum frames.
