3 shift positions on 2x front lever?
Hello,
I am installing a shimano 105 groupset (R7000) and it seems that the front shift lever allows for three shifts, although they are defined as "2x11-speed". So when moving from the big to smaller chainring i need to shift twice. Is this normal or due to poor front derailleur setup?
Thanks in advance.
Teo

There is a trim function on higher end S groups which allow you to trim out the chain rub on certain combinations.

Here is an owner's manual document which discusses the trim function: https://si.shimano.com/pdfs/um/UM-6VX0A-002-00-ENG.pdf

If you don't want trim, you could use the SRAM yaw FD. The front pivots farther then the rear, and the front of the cage is wider. This design allows for no chain rub on all gear range for the 2 double chainrings, if you set it up right. The triggers on the SRAM yaw only have 2 positions.
however I already had a Shimano 4700 shifter with 4 index positions, with trim position for each of the 2 low and high positions. So I just use my 4 position Shimano shifter with the SRAM yaw FD. The cable pull on the 4700 is very long like on Shimano road 11 speed. So the low index and low trim have cable slack so the FD is stopped by the L limit screw. I set the H limit screw so that the high index and high trim hit it and are e therefore essentially the same. That means I have 4 indexes on my trigger but only controls 2 physical FD positions.

All Shimano front shifters for 10- and 11-speed doubles have four positions.
