The Middle Fork Road is now open again!

A landslide had closed the road about 7 miles in last winter and it wasn’t expected to reopen until sometime in summer. Covid measures closed it entirely over a month ago in order to keep people away from crowding the popular hiking trails that line the road. With the gradual lifting of restrictions this week, the roadblocks were taken down.

I rode it yesterday on my Bruce Gordon past the pavement to Dingford Creek before turning back.

Thermometer barely squeaked over 60 today with a stiff chill breeze. I'll be glad to put the knee and arm warmers away; hopefully soon! Went on one of my standard routes today, pictured elsewhere in the thread. Found a sunny warm spot by the UVA Rotunda. Couple of new grads out taking pics in their gowns.

First ride on the 165 cranks...switched from 172.5 and there was a big noticeable difference.

I've been having fun with my Raleigh Sports 3 speed lately. Mostly commuting to work when it doesn't rain. 5 miles each way, fairly flat. The gearing on the AW is still pretty rugged. I haven't had a chance to try this set up on gravel yet.

42/20-- worked out really well for this type of ride. Not much elevation change. Great for getting up to speed quickly, handling short climbs, and navigating technical stuff/terrain changes without losing traction.

What is that frame??

That's close to what I rode on my 700c cyclocross bike and I felt it to be a little tall, but you've got smaller wheels (and I'm really weak)

The frame is a 1977 Schwinn Super Le Tour 12.2. The clear coat on it was getting a little ratty and cloudy so I stripped and waxed it. I can get new decals for it but for now I'm really liking the bare chrome frame with just a headbadge

I was aiming to push slightly fewer gear inches than my BMX bike to account for some light sustained climbing. Hard to ride for too long with this setup though as I'm exclusively out of the saddle unless sitting to rest in some flat sections-- 45mins and I was toast!

The Schwinn looks awesome! Looks great with the black accents, too. Keeping that in mind for my future chrome build

I have found 38/16 works best for a alround vintage SS but nice 38 chaninrings at a good price are hard to find. The current new alloy ones tend to wear out in only a couple of months gravel gtinding.

Since getting back home I've confined my riding so far to the North Shore. Today I decided to see what Chicago's streets look like during the pandemic. I took two old commuting routes Clark & Wells southbound from Evanston and Milwaukee, Elston and California north from the Loop. This was actually the first time I've ridden up California between Lawrence and Pratt. Normally I would have been on the North Channel Trail, but I figured it might be closed, so didn't chance it.

I needn't have worried about traffic on California. Basically, everywhere I went it was like an early Sunday morning before the brunch crowd has been aroused after Saturday night's debauchery.

Knockin on wood right now. At 31 years old I hope the knee problems don't start. No specific reason for the switch.

Difference I felt was a quicker take off from a dead stop and climbs felt easier to rotate the cranks.

Rode about an hour on the local MUP on my fixed gear yesterday. Tried out a more angled position on the porteur bars, but didn't really gain or lose anything comfort-wise.

Going to rotate them back up to level just because it looks a lot better IMO
