Hi All, I was mentioning yesterday at the ride, that I have a Raleigh Gran Sport frameset to give away, size 54c-t and 56 c-c in good conditions, white and the chrome parts are really nice.
I'll take a basic low offer or exchange with a campy part or Brooks saddle.

Make sure you bring extra water (for yourself and others) and make some of it loaded with electrolytes and sodium. Take extra Calcium before the ride if you are prone to cramps. Have a plan to stop and ask for water or use of a hose to wet and cool yourself down. With full sun, non-breathing polyester or lycra clothing, lack of wind, you can overheat very easily without realizing it, especially on the turn up and climb from Foothill and then the long gradual climb along Sierra Madre. Not much shade up there and no shops to buy or get additional fluids. If anyone runs into heat problems, get them out of the sun, into shade, get water into them and onto them to cool them off. Consider calling 911 if ANY concerns. Really warm and red skin, plus changes in mentation, balance, and rapid heart rate are potential danger signs, and internal core temps can climb beyond 100 deg. really fast. Minutes count, don't be shy about calling for help.

Last year I rode in 91-92 deg. temps on this ride and almost exhausted all my water and fluids when I got to bean town. I felt really warm and went inside and immediately got additional cold ice water and completely loosened all my clothing, doused my head and clothes. I could barely stand or even sit and I could not feel the air conditioning inside, I was that warm body temp wise. It took me almost 15 minutes to cool down to where I felt halfway ok, and in retrospect, I was probably about 5-10 minutes more riding away from heat stroke. I had stopped 3-4 times to take fluids on that climb that day (and its not steep) but the sun and heat is relentless in that area. Be cautious and safe out there and have a great time. I wish I could be with you.

I had a similar situation in El Cajon a few years ago. 105 in the shade and I had only gone about 15 miles , feeling ok but water would not quench my thirst and felt some fade in my cognitive response. I stopped at a Starbucks and had some Passion iced tea , the only time I ever did a refill. It worked and since then have been riding with Nuun in my water . Even in hot weather I’m good for 40 miles before “the fade” . At our age it is not good to push our bodies without supplements and even then, take it easy. I rarely eat much while riding so the supplements help. I have a low heart rate and lean towards low blood sugar so I also keep a granola bar with me. I wish I could do the ride down there tomorrow but I am heading out to the coast on my usual Sunday ride. This week it will be the ItalVega. I have it all ready out on the stand and ready to go, I will carry extra water as it was even warm along the coast today. Heading back to Santa Paula it will gain about one degree f. per mile . Joe

I remember that day, I noticed You looked a little dry and werent sweating anymore over at BeanTown. Wish you would have said something I could have helped you out a little.

Ill make sure and fill my jersey pockets with some big bottled waters to keep handy in case anyone needs some.

And some closeups of the Surly and Campy Cranks. BTW, That Surly was a really cool and versatile bicycle, He had the hydration issue pretty well covered with all those bottle holders.. Great bike Dustin !

Thanks for posting the photos. Too hot for me, and with the virus deal, wasn't sure if anybody was riding. I remember the day Bart was talking about last year. Most of my vintage bikes only have one bottle holder, which is usually enough. Here's a shot of my Garmin from that day. The Garmin is usually about 10° high, but even so, it was hot. Hope to see you guys soon. Stay cool, 😎 stay healthy!

Well, hope everyone stayed home or in a nice cool place today. Temp was 104 at 11:00 am start time and right now at 2:25pm, reading 109 supposedly still rising to 110-112. The sun and heat would be brutal for anyone so not safe to ride today.

Stay cool and hope October is more comfortable and safe.

I heard from friends in the area that there was a fire above Monrovia, too. Yuck.

Yes, the Bobcat Fire broke out around noon in the hills above Monrovia-Azusa, about 12-15 miles northeast as the crow flies from Beantown Cafe in Sierra Madre, our rest stop. Air Quality in Los Angeles and Pasadena was already poor due to the high heat and inversion layer we've had. This week won't be any better with Santa Ana winds slated to come in by Tuesday and Wednesday, and temps Monday still in the high 100's and high 90's during the week.

The ride has been going on for at least 20 years. Chuck Schmidt, our host says “the ride goes on even if nobody shows up.” The pandemic has been the only major slowdown in ridership although the excessive heat and smoke would have made yesterday’s ride very difficult and even dangerous in good times.

Hopefully when things get better all around, we’ll see you at a future ride.

Everyone, Snap some pics of potential bikes you would ride with us at future Velo-Retro rides.

To juxtapose the heat you're dealing with I'll post a pic of my bike that I'd like to ride there posed in a bit of snow, pic from last winter in Idaho. 1973 Raleigh Super Course.

Easily fixed, just grind the cracked lug away with an angle grinder and build a fillet in its place. Rustoleum over it and nobody will know.

I would have taken my Tommasini Prestige with its newly installed Concor America saddle. Also to test out the recently adjusted headset.
