Preferred shorts?
Looking for some new shorts! My old favorite Performance Ultra seems not the same, and certainly my old examples are not the same. I'm looking at Kucharik and Aerotek. Both have several pad designs, a sensible sizing chart, and are priced way below Pearl Izumi.
Anybody still have their BF50+ cycling shorts? I have the vague recollection those were made by Aerotech. I only wore it a few times, but I liked it.
Tell me what you like. I plan to continue training for longer rides, and someday sooner rather than later, be ready for a metric (first one since 2011!) and a birthday ride before it snows. I'm using several different Selle Anatomica saddles for all this, on my two Mondonicos and on the Terraferma (fendered) when it looks like precipitation.

I'm a fan of Aerotech. I realize that when I'm taking a short ride with my wife, I'll wear some other brand. On a longer ride I always wear a pair of Aerotechs.

Since I do a lot of utility cycling, I favor expedition shorts from REI. They look like regular streetwear, complete with handy zippering pockets, but they have a full chamois-line bike short inner layer.

Another vote for Aerotech Designs. I like the 'Wild Print' shorts with the (sometimes) whacky side panel graphics and thin padding. From my experience you'll want to order one size larger than you do for other brands of shorts.

Frankly I have great luck with Canari Gel shorts I have bought at Dick's sporting goods for $40. They have actually done as well and held up better than others. The gel pad works fine and I don't see a need to do anything different. My only gripe is I wish shorts came with some flash like strips and some contrast. I don't use bibs and after riding all these years and miles I would like to get a cool match kit that does not look like I am imitating a pro but nice. Also I don't want it to cost a fortune. I suppose that won't happen. I ride a huge amount of miles so I know these Canari's work fine.

I like a thin pad. When I tried the Aerotech Pros, one of the pad's seams hit me exactly in a saddle sore. I went with Boure's Classic shorts and recommend them highly. Twice the cost and more than the Aerotech Pros, but they worked for me when the Pros didn't. If I lose another 10 or 15 pounds, I'll be able to wear my old Black Bottoms - wool and chamois.- and Cannondale's first nylon shorts, with a small fluffy pad.

Ironic -- I was just looking at this thread a few days ago and noticed yesterday that I had worn holes in one pair of double/expedition/mountain biking shorts. Ah, the downside of stepping up my mileage considerably. I have one new pair coming from REI, another coming from my LBS.

Przewalski and Spotti with DuPont CoolMax pads, and Black Bibs. All are good and cheap. Thicker, dense pads, but I ride firm saddles and have a bony butt, so I need the extra padding.
Before losing about 25 lbs I liked the Aerotech Pro shorts, and still wear them as underwear with baggy shorts or jeans for riding my hybrid bikes. But the Aerotech Pro pad isn't thick enough now after losing weight and natural cushioning on my sit bones.

I received my Aerotechs, but they are too big. My wife thinks two sizes too big! So I'm going to return them for Mediums. I think I'm also going to try a Bourre Elite in Medium.

Not intended. The point is that most short makers do not make their own padding. The design and manufacture is from a source in Italy. I would imagine nowadays, several are from Asia.
A few years back, I purchased the shorts from 2XU, the compression sportswear company. But unfortunately, its no longer offered. The triathlon shorts are available but its not the same padding.
If padding is an important feature -- I mean comfort on the contact point, then its worthwhile to examine the various types of padding for the types of rides.
