Tried beating the heat and humidity, but wasn't to be, as I got a late start once again. Total of 62 miles to the end of Hawthorne Trail and return. Black skies closed in yet again (typical FL summer weather), and spent the last 10 minutes in a pelting rain. Felt kinda good except for the wet, sandy last few miles. To think I just cleaned my drivetrain yesterday.........

Headed to Sarasota tomorrow for the weekend and planning to bring the bike. The ride on Longboat Key to Anna Marie Island is laid back and fabulous.

72 miles over to the in-laws for burgers and dogs for the 4th. Humid and warm!

Got started before sunrise so watched the sun come up

Stopped at a roadside stand for a couple fresh “maters” for the burgers. Kind of a tight fit in my jersey pockets.

3 laps of Prospect Park and they felt good. I was able to maintain a harder pace than I could the other day. The difference was the lower temp and humidity.

The plan was to get out super early, but it was already warming up at 8:15 when I finally got underway. The ride out to Anna Marie Pier was vigorous, as I tried to keep pace with some younger, in-shape riders. The return was worse - a guy an a Madone was pushing 21, and I started to fade a bit. Still, ended up at 52 and met the lovely wife for a great lunch at The Crab Bin in Sarasota.

50 miles on Longboat Key to Anna Marie Island. Scarfed a nice breakfast at a local cafe. This ends our romantic getaway in Sarasota.

Glad I brought the bike, 150 miles in 3 days.

17 miles today, I just saw the 50 plus area. I never think of myself as being there but I am almost 58. I feel like 17 on a good day and 80 on a bad day.

Dag nabbit! 39.6 miles. I missed 40 by just that much... I went from my house to the watershed trail/goshen trail/nickelplate trail, then onto the nature trail down to the schoolhouse trail that runs along horseshoe lake. It was 95 and humid on the way out, and pop-up thunderstorm on the way back. I'm glad my trunk bag came with a rain cover, so my phone and wallet could stay dry.

Extra note: Lesson learned; never go riding in the rain when you've not washed the helmet pads in quite a while. 🤢

Horseshoe Lake. My bike, obscured by a picinic table. Sorry for my poor composition skills.

I took a chance and escaped the city for the first time since March. Over the GWB to Jersey.

Was riding my usual route around our city this morning. It's been very windy here for the past couple of days. I was on my first downhill of the ride, doing round 25. All of a sudden this headwind/crosswind gust hit me. Got all squirely (cf Cervelo with Mavic Cosmic Carbone wheels) and saw my roadrash life flash before me. Took it easy for the rest of the ride. lol

50 miles with 2300’ of climbing. I walked 18 holes this morning shooting a solid 73 and on greens that were pretty bumpy from being aerated on Monday. Then rode for about 3 hours after lunch. I’ve been using electrolyte capsules while playing golf which helps me keep energy levels up. Retirement is GOOD!!!

I rode by an air separation facility that I visited numerous times while working. They use a lot of electricity and have some large horsepower motors. There 3 main products are oxygen, nitrogen and argon. The facility’s footprint is not that large for the amount of power they use. There’s not a lot of argon in the air so that’s their smallest product and most expensive.

3 laps of Prospect Park on my newly restored Cannondale Criterium from the 80s. The restoration consisted of repacking the front hub, washing it down thoroughly including the chain, lubing the chain with Squirt was lube, and then replacing the brake levers, calipers, cables, housing and adding cross levers. The calipers were flexy and the lever hoods were completely gummy so I just figured I'd get new. It stops like a new bike now with Centaur dual pivot calipers. This bike isn't for me though, it is for my daughter and she dictated blue bar tape and housing to match the blue Cannondale lettering on an otherwise all white bike.

No, didn't ride today but my saddle sore is finally healing. The dermatologist says maybe another 6 weeks of off-the-bike. I've been running instead of riding. My doctor told me today that for sure the reason my right glute hurts so bad that I can hardly walk is that I have piriformis syndrome and maybe I'll be able to walk normally again in a couple weeks if I carefully follow his treatment regimen. And for sure it was the running that brought it on, though the fact that I'm a defective POS was a contributing factor. This age crap is starting to suck. Hoping that it's temporary and rejoicing that all this went down in the Covid year and I didn't really miss anything, other than the important things, like being able to ride, hike, run, that kind of thing.

I got up this morning and just like yesterday, could hardly walk. I dug around in the medicine cabinet and found a 2008 oxycontin bottle with a few pills still in the bottom, prescribed by my doctor for my mom's horrible back pain a couple years before she passed. I took one and then had a cup of really strong coffee before my doctor's appointment, I felt really good except for the glute pain, which it didn't really touch. I told my doctor about it. He said, well yes, and then it's 2 pills and then that doesn't work anymore and then it's 3 pills . . . He said the normal prescription is one every 4-6 hours, so when I went home, I took another one, which finally started to work on the pain. I decided to go back to work, but quickly discovered that I was too stoopid to do anything useful. So much for my future oxycontin addiction, not happening. Gave me some insight into Limbaugh's thought processes for sure, though.

Anyway, that's why I didn't ride today.

West Orange Trail , Florida

Started out raining, turned into a gorgeous day for my longest ride of 50.76 miles. Thankfully the trail stations are reopened for bathroom breaks and water! Have a great day everyone.

100.5 miles with 5800’ of climbing along the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A little toasty the last 25 miles but the humidity was a touch improved.

Decision time to either go long or longer!

Last nights storm turned the river muddy.

Just following a well marked route.

See the Blue Ridge Mountains? I’m on the south side.

Kapps Mill Dam

Banner season for corn. Probably going to be a historic yield.

Tobacco fields making a comeback? They were everywhere today. It used to be the money crop in NC but folks stopped growing it about 25 years ago.

Masked up for a store stop.

Our favorite vineyard!
