Can someone suggest a rim/hub/spoke combo that'd be real easy to calculate and build.

Bikes: Had a Surly Cross Check - was totaled in recent accident. Sadly now just a Fuji Crosstown as a backup bike.

Can someone suggest a rim/hub/spoke combo that'd be real easy to calculate and build.
Weight is not an issue. I want a 36 spoke 3 cross standard wheel that is strong when I'm done. I noticed alot of calculators have certain combos programmed in, and was wondering if someone knew a particular combo that works real well and could help me out with spoke lengths. I'd talk to a LBS - but I have none. I'll be ordering the spokes, rim, and hub online, and really need to get it right.

Front or rear wheel? If rear, what's your frame spacing? How many speeds in the back (cassette or freewheel, or is this an SS/FG?)
Can't really go wrong with a good Shimano hub and a Mavic rim. I know Mavic makes a good strong rim meant for touring and stuff, however I don't know what it's called.

Sorry, should have given more information.
Front and rear. 9 speed. 130mm frame spacing. Cassette. I just want something that is bombproof.

email the online store you are buying from. If you are buying all the parts from them some will guarantee they will come together correctly, I think I ordered from lick bicycle, and when their sales rep screwed up, they sent me a new set of spokes. I built the wheel around a Phil Wood hub so it was a fairly expensive sale. I think Harris cyclery will also guarantee, but for a smallish sum they will also build it for you, which might be worth the money if you value your time and don't need a learning experience.
Otherwise use the parts covered in the databases of hub and rim dimensions. Post you plan on this msg board to see what others think. If you are looking for cheap people who cut generic spokes regularly post on ebay so you can buy from them and if you screw up, buy again from them until you get it right. I have built 3 wheels using spokes off ebay and have not been screwed by any of the sellers, the generic spokes have not failed.

I think it simplifies the process. If you're looking at something like a Shimano Tiagra 4500 rear hub with a Velocity Dyad rim, it shows 287mm and 289mm for the spoke lengths.
(You have to click on the names of the hub, rim or click on "enter your own measurements".)

If clearence is not a problem I would go with Shimano 105 hubs, DT double butted spokes and Mavic 319 rims. Should be good to 300 pounds.
If clearance is a concern go with Mavic Open Sport rims.
