Bikes: Had a Surly Cross Check - was totaled in recent accident. Sadly now just a Fuji Crosstown as a backup bike.

Where can I get decent wheels built online?

I've seen a few places online - where would you order a decent handbuilt wheelset designed to last for a while? I'm willing to spend 200-300. I don't race - would rather be reliable and strong.

Thanks!

Colorado Cyclist (www.coloradocyclist.com) sells very good "handbuilt" wheels with your choice of rims, hubs and spokes. I assume they are machine assembled but hand trued and tensioned. My experience with them has been excellent. My current set of Mavic CXP-33 32H rims on Campy Chorus hubs with DT 2.0/1.8/2.0 spokes laced 3X now have 18,000 miles and have never needed any attention. An earlier pair built on Dura Ace 7700-hubs went 28,000 miles before the brake tracks got too worn to trust and they remained true the entire time.

These wheels aren't cheap but they are very durable and worth the slight cost premium.

I've never heard of psimet until now, so I can't say much for him, but I have heard good things about wheelbuilder. I would contact psimet first though, I personally like the idea of helping out a fellow BF member before I go somewhere else.

You can do a search for Handspun Velocity rims, Deore LX hubs. I know places like niagaracycle sell them.

Peter White (peterwhitecycles.com) does custom builds, and his work is good.

CompetitiveCyclist.com built me a sweet Chris King wheelset. The price was as good as any other online and the quality was very good.

EDIT- OP wanted to spend $200-300. No idea where to find a decent handbuilt set at that price.

Lots of choices in your price range here;
https://www.bicyclewheelwarehouse.com/road/cat_1.html I have a set of their wheels and they have been excellent.

Unless you are really heavy, these would be a great choice;

I went through Excel Sports Boulder - they did a nice job... limited choices but all good stuff and reasonably priced.

They have some standard builds or full custom.

+1 on Colorado Cyclist. I've bought a few pairs of their Mavic rims on Formula hubs for customer builds and they have worked out very well. Don't underestimate the value of eBay and semi-hand built wheels, however. You can pick up a set of Ultegra huibs laced to Open Pro rims- 36H, so good for the heftier set- for around $300 on a good day. I have those on two of my personal rides and they are bombproof.

any thoughts on these guys: prowheelbuilder.com? I've "virtually" built wheels on their site before but never pulled the trigger.

I had a set built by them once. They goofed my spoke type and I had to ship them back and have them rebuilt, which they did. They seemed good and true out of the box (both times), but unfortunately I crashed and bent them up less than a month after I got them. I trued them myself after that and have continued to tweek them every now and again but considering how out of wack they were from the crash I can't blame anything on the build.

For that budget and if you dont care about weight i would get miche wheels. Good, easy to fix, come straight out of the box and reliable.

A little more info would help. How much do you weigh and what type of bike are you putting the wheels on?

I had prowheelbuilder.com make me a set of wheels on reynolds carbon rims. They did a good job, the rear's needed just a tiny bit of truing (which is good for me, I am hard on rear wheels).

Why are we looking online for wheelbuilding? I know we live on the Internet, but aren't there good local resources available? If you have a good LBS in the neighborhood, you should ask them.

My local shops couldn't come within $100 of the price I paid for 36h Open Pros on 6700 Ultegra hubs, db spokes last winter. I tried 3 shops.

This isn't where I got them but similiar price.

I agree. even with budget NOS STX hubs and FIR tubular rims, also NOS, I still came out over $300 with spokes and labor. but just where do you get 7spd cassette 32h box section tubular wheels sets with a radial front off the rack these days?

I don't trust any of my 7 LBS when I called and they don't own a tensionmeter. That scares me.
