Wheel rebuild question.. spokes too long now?
I replaced a hub on a wheel and used the old spokes, nipples and rim. The new hub and the old hub are the same diameter.. but somehow the spokes are now too long..? I'm really confused. The spokes extend past the edges of the rim now and would poke the tube if not for the rim strip.
The only thing I can think of is the wheel was built 4 cross originally, but looking at the old hub lacing marks it really looks like was the same pattern. Is there any other way my spokes could have grown an extra 10mm or so?

The hub may have been originally 3 cross and then rebuilt for 4 before you rebuilt. Of course the spokes aren't longer, and although a hub with flanges closer together would require shorter spokes the difference would be much smaller. Rebuild 4x.

thanks.. I might just end up using different spokes in that case. Here is the only image i have of the wheels. They look like 3x to me but I'm totally familiar with the differences.

Just looking at Spocalc numbers on a 26"/559mm wheel I built and 4X uses a 7.5mm longer spoke than 3X.

Just to make sure... By "diameter", you don't mean the over-locknut-distance (OLD, or hub width), do you?
Are you 100% sure the spoke holes are set at the same diameter? Have you measured 'em?
The distance of each flange from the centerline will affect the spoke length you need, too.

thanks, I took a look at that tool and it has both the rim and the hub I'm using.. that will make it easier to make sure i have the right length spokes. i guess this donor wheel was 4x and I just never thought about it. oh well, good wheel building practice

Apologies for hijacking this thread, but it brings up something that I have been thinking about for a while. I have never built a wheel, but have watched a couple of videos online about it. All of them recomend lacing half of the spokes and then rotating the hub. Surely the spoke length determines how much this rotation will be and, provided the spokes are all the same length (front wheel) would make up for the spokes being (within reason) longer or shorter than they should be? Thanks

No, it would not make up for the wrong length, as the other spokes on the same side face in the opposite direction. If the spokes are too long then the rotation will shift the 2nd set of spokes too far forward.
