My First Ten Years

I lurk a lot, but very seldom post. However, for me, today is a special day. Today ends my tenth year of cycling. My first bike was a Trek 1200C purchased on this date in 2005, from Maplewood Bicycles in Maplewood, Missouri. I still have the 1200C, and ride in quite often.

In ten years I’ve had in my possession 11 different bicycles, with my current N number at 5.

In ten years I’ve ridden over 27,000 miles, of those miles, 14,500 miles have been on the Katy Trail. (I live very close to the Katy.)

I’ve completed 18 centuries, and 8 Tour de Donuts. I’ve ridden the Katy Trail end to end 3 times.

While these accomplishments are small compared to some, I feel pretty good about them.

Now at 65, I’m looking forward to the next ten years.

Thanks for reading.

That's averaging 2700 miles and nearly 2 centuries a year from when you started. Great accomplishment!

"While these accomplishments are small compared to some, I feel pretty good about them."

You should feel very good about your cycling. My wife and I are turning 65 this summer, and you are well ahead of us in your past-decade cycling accomplishments.

When the biking bug bit you, it got you good....

I have also ridden the Katy Trail end-to-end, and it is a great ride.

Congratulations.

That's awesome. This season marks 10 yrs. since I came back to cycling after an 8 yr. layoff. Nowhere near the accomplishments you've posted but I am stronger, faster and lighter. Congratulations.

Happy Anniversary!!! Those are stats to be proud of and surpassed in the next 10 years if all goes well.

My journey started back in the late 70's with a 15+ year lay-off and even with all those extra years I still don't equal your miles.

Great riding report.

I'll probably miss the TdD this year; however, I'd doing the Katy end-to-end in June with my son, son-in-law, and a friend of theirs. I've done the Katy the last 4 years. I'm looking forward to the proposed extensions to it. I just hope they hurry up and get it done while I can still ride!

See you out there!

Inspirational post, you don't say much here, but when you do its pretty solid stuff. Maybe I need to take a cue from you.

Hi David,

Funny thing, I worked at Maplewood Bicycle (suburb of St.Louis) from '80 - '84, back when it was still owned by Rich Morris. I have lots of good memories of those days and my years in the St.Louis area.

I have ridden parts of the Katy Trail but never the whole thing; still have that on my list of rides to do.

You have made great progress in your ten years of return to cycling, congratulations!
