Where did you see them? I'm kinda curious now.

Shimano needs to guard their hard-earned market carefully these days. I'm gradually switching over to Microshift brifters as of late. Among all of the types I have tried (in 8 speed anyway) I like the performance of them the best, and they're also much cheaper than anything Shimano produces. Don't get me wrong though, Shimano is clearly capable of producing a superior product, but they seem to have a lot of trouble keeping their prices down.

Damn! Everything is STILL black? I thought that trend would have run its course by now. But I thought the same thing 25 years ago about rap music, saggy pants, and white kids pretending to be black.

I don't think that bikeradar.com article tells us anything new. The Shimano group description article says it was last updated March 12, 2018.

I also find Microshift derailleurs to be a good value; the designs seem solid and the machine work is of good quality. They have also not abandoned the sub-10 speed market.

My only experience with Microshift components is their 10-speed downtube levers supplied as OEM on Gevenalle/Retroshift brifters. They shift accurately and have been very durable. They also have a much easier action than Shimano levers.

Trickle down has been going on for the last 20+ years with Shimano (and most other manufactures), occasionally lower tier will have upgrades before a higher tier, but that's normally due to the sequence that groupsets get upgraded.

For 2018 it was 105 (R7000) and XTR (M9100 w/microspline hub) for 2019, Tiagra is due for a replacement, and will probably become a 10 speed vesion on R7000, with the same shifter design at R7000 just like the 4700 is a 10 speed version of 5800. For MTB XT and SLX are also due and will take design cues from XTR level (i.e. the trickle down), but wouldn't be surprised if they were held off for a bit (maybe till 2020) due to the issues Shimano has had with the introduction of M9100.

Have you seen the latest Potenza and Centaur groups? You can find them at very competitive prices, and they are still a step ahead of their peers...

Do they still do single step shifting?
