Pesticide residues found in 70% of produce sold in US even after washing
About 70% of fresh produce sold in the US has pesticide residues on it even after it is washed, according to a health advocacy group.
According to the Environmental Working Group’s annual analysis of US Department of Agriculture data, strawberries, spinach and kale are among the most pesticide-heavy produce, while avocados, sweetcorn and pineapples had the lowest level of residues.
More than 92% of kale tested contained two or more pesticide residues, according to the analysis, and a single sample of conventionally farmed kale could contain up to 18 different pesticides.
Dacthal – the most common pesticide found, which was detected in nearly 60% of kale samples, is banned in Europe and classified as a possible human carcinogen in the US.

& thanks to Dow’s neurotoxic pesticide chlorpyrifos aka CPF Nerve Gas we can expect many more years of children w/ autism
The EPA says it's reversing course and keeping chlorpyrifos on the market. That's despite the agency's earlier conclusion, that this pesticide could pose risks to consumers. It's a signal that toxic chemicals will face less restrictive regulation

Nothing is 100% clean and pure anymore, not unless you grow your own.

If you can't east vegetables or nerve gas children, what's left to live for?

I actually do eat fish, so I am not really a vegetarian. But this is a major reason to avoid eating meat. I definitely think it is worthwhile to avoid ingesting pesticides, but eating animals fed on pesticide-laden feed concentrates it far worse than what is on the plants themselves. Also, many "organic" variants produce their own array of pesticides and other noxious chemicals. You really can't win.

It seems even with pesticides, veggies have still been proven to be essential for good health.

Old news, maybe finally getting some attention. Why every food we buy, if possible, is organic. The extra cost is minimal. Organic food and the bicycle: best doctors you'll ever have.

While many more studies will be done, the number already done is quite amazing, see the studies sidebar in the above NCBI meta-study.

the report on kale surprised me, partly because it is one of the most nutritious veggies. kale is fairly easy to grow, after planting just keep it wet and it kinda takes care of itself.

It wasn't cooked but raw and had some kind of very light oil or liquid on it. Not sure what it was but it tastes fantastic.
Most of their "Paleo" dishes taste very good. I think it is because it has minimally processed ingredients without all kinds of chemicals.
Whole foods also sells Taza 85% super dark chocolate from Mexico. Not milk chocolate with all the junk in it but the real stuff which is good for you in moderation. This stuff is great, unlike any chocolate I've ever eaten and Whole Foods is the only place I can find it.
Not trying to turn this into a Whole Foods/Amazon commercial and sorry to go off topic. I shop there occasionally and only for a few specific items.

But Anderson said the latest data suggest this mortality trend is heavily influenced by the ongoing drug epidemic and a rising rate of suicides nationwide. And many people dying as a result of those two causes tend to be younger than in recent decades, he said.

Before you get concerned about anything published or promoted by the EWG, check out the following:

Essentially, the EWG is completely comfortable exaggerating data, presenting data in misleading ways, confusing possibility with probability, etc.

The Center for Organizational Research and Education (CORE), formerly the Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) and prior to that the Guest Choice Network, is an American non-profit entity founded by Richard Berman that lobbies on behalf of the fast food, meat, alcohol and tobacco industries. It describes itself as "dedicated to protecting consumer choices and promoting common sense."[2] Experts on non-profit law have questioned the validity of the group's non-profit status in The Chronicle of Philanthropy and other publications,[3]
[4] while commentators from Rachel Maddow to Michael Pollan have treated the group as an entity that specializes in astroturfing.[5]
The organization has been critical of organizations including the Centers for Disease Control, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, The Humane Society of the United States, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.[2]

Berman's organizations have run numerous media campaigns concerning obesity, soda taxation, smoking, cruelty to animals, mad cow disease, taxes, the national debt, drinking and driving, as well as not increasing the minimum wage. He is hired by companies to attack consumer, safety and environmental groups.

Well, ya know, facts are political these days. Everyone has their own facts. According to its website, Activist Facts is a a project of the Center for Organizational Research and Education (CORE). From the Wiki entry for CORE: From attorney and lobbyist Richard Berman's wiki: I think we might let the gentle reader decide for themselves whom to believe.
EWG first gained public attention when they reported farm program payments. The problem was that they presented 5 year totals, and included payments never received by farmers. This gave the impression of farmers receiving more govt aid than actually received.
Similarly, they currently proclaim your food is full of pesticides, but fail to mention that the levels are far below levels known to do damage. They also fail to test for or report the presence of organic pesticides or other common chemicals present in harmless levels.
You can question CORE, but the examples presented stand on their own.

And washing produce in order to "get rid of the pesticides" has always seemed pretty naive to me. You would think people who work around those fields would be dropping like flies if the stuff was THAT dangerous.
