Chain Slipping - only mid crank ring

Hi

Ok so I reviewed past posts on chain slipping as I have it. Happens starting under medium stress and then increases with stress. I have played with this and it only happens with the mid ring (of a triple) I have been using the high and low ring to get around - but this is getting annoying

So likely mid ring replacement? This is a vintage Nishiki Colorado mountain bike with the oval track / biopace like crank. Will it be hard to find a replacement ring? - Presuming this is the issue

Thanks

Mid chain ring needs replacing , replace the chain at the same time...

Bummer - but thanks for the confirmation.

Would it be possible to replace the entire crank with just a regular crank? I have a good co-op which allows me to do work and have access to used parts for a good price ...? Or could I just replace the mid one with a round one ?

As long as the bolt-circle diameter matches, there's no problem replacing a BioPace ring with a round ring.

Cool

I have had this same issue with a bio pace crank before on another bike - and after replacing the frt derailer, playing with the rear derailer , spending time and money - it never did get fixed. Finally it was stolen - good luck to them

Is this something that the biopace cranks do, something to do with me (I tend to prefer the constant pace/spin philosophy) - or just the facct that I pick old used bikes?

It's probably just that they're old bikes. A BioPace outer ring needs a little more care in setting up the front derailleur clearance, but replacing the BioPace middle ring with a round ring of the same tooth count shouldn't affect anything.

Actually, there are quite a few BioPace rings for sale on Ebay at the moment. But you might as well go ahead and replace the entire crankset.

If OP has a bike co-op nearby, they likely have dozens of cast off Biopace rings laying around, as the rings are frequently replaced with round ones. I know I have several I don't use.

Good to know - I was planning on digging through their piles tomorrow so we will see what we can find

Why dont people like the biopace rings? personal preference?

Great info all! Thanks
