Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Are there a lot of places to bike in Singapore? I may have an opportunity to move there in the future, but was wondering about the bike opportunities...

There are a lot of bike shops here, and prices here are normally cheaper than other countries. The bike scene here is certainly evolving, but it still has a long way to go before it becomes like the USA or Europe.

Generally cycling on the roads here is dangerous due to the appalling attitude of motorists here, and sad to say there are more atrocious drivers than benevolent ones.

I may be the lone voice in the wilderness, but I think you've got a sharp looking bike there -- and the fenders don't even look out of place.

Thanks for the response. Okay, so cycling on roads is dangerous - I can imagine, like most of Asia. So are there cycle paths for cycling? Can you go to the country to cycle?

Thanks.

Singapore doesn't have a "country".

You can take a ferry to Malaysia or Indonesia.

So the only place to cycle in Singapore is on the roads and risk getting killed by aggressive drivers? Guess it's kind of like Hong Kong, although there are some extremely crowed bike paths available...

Yeah, I need to get a seatpost with less setback - maybe even zero. Position feels nice, though.

Thanks!

Finally got around to taking a picture of my new-to-me bike.

It's a 2006 Giant TCR Alliance TM bike, in the now collector's item T-Mobile livery. The previous owner is ranked 2 in Israel's road masters 4 category (which explains the 30/42/52 triple I find useful, as my area is quite hilly.)

My only gripe is with the wheels, which are really heavy. I plan to build some Ultegra-Aeroheads wheels when I'll have the funds.

I used to ride MTBs (which explains the SPD pedals,) but I'm finding road riding much more fun. So much fun, I don't think I'll go off-road again...

I don't think you're alone on the setback problem. In my opinion Easton seatposts have too much set back! I have the the same problem as do others I've seen

Thanks. I had to wait a while because, although it is not a custom color scheme, it was not in stock. Apparently there are certain colors that are prepared in advance and kept in stock and for other, even if they are in their catalog, you just have to wait.

I did not mind. I had not sold my previous bike and the waiting was worth it.

My latest build, in at 15.15 lbs. I'm not sure yet if I'm done or if I'll change a few details here and there.
