1983 Nishiki Sebring

Thanks for the serial number decode.

In September 2008, I paid $40 for a Giant built 06/1983 Nishiki Sebring 12 speed (G0683 3684274) that was listed on Craigslist by original owner.

Here are its specs:
cr-mo 4130 tubing
Suntour AR front and rear der
Sugino 170mm crank w 52x40 chain rings
Avaya rims
Suzue hubs
DIA Compe brakes
Avocet touring saddle
Seat tube mark: 73
headtube marks: 73 top and 59 bottom by fork

KJ 22217. 1980 International. I picked it up last Saturday and spent Sunday cleaning it up. It was filthy but I could tell it would shine up nicely. Besides some scratches and some paint nicks it is in really good condition.
It had the original brown cloth bar tape and brown brake hoods but they were both turning to dust.
The tires are original and still in good shape.
My 2nd International in a month.

I'm pretty sure what you have is from late 1972. As you may know, if you've waded through this thread, American Eagle was the predecessor to Nishiki. The brand was still going by American Eagle at the beginning of 1972 but had converted to Nishiki by 1973. However, by 1973 your model was called the Olympic, leading me to believe that it is from late 1972 and a very early Nishiki.

The Olympic was 2nd from the bottom of the 1973 line, so your Olympiad probably occupied the same spot. Original price for a 1973 Olympic was $119 US, so yours would have been slightly less. At the time, this was was the most popular of the Nishiki models.

I'm assuming it has the bamboo style logo and a WCC andor WCCS embossing on the bottom bracket and/or rear dropouts? WCCS was West Coast Cycle Supply, the importer of Nishiki. If you could post some pics, it would be appreciated.

I'd like to know year and how good of a model it is. Also maybe how much it is worth. I live in Boston. I've attached some pictures that hopefully help.

Thanks in advance
Unfortunately, the pics are not clear enough to assist me in stating anything other than that it is a entry level model. If, you could attach clearer, drive side photos, it would be a big help. Alternately, the brands and models of the major components would be useful info.

Found in a shed...

Hello, T-Mar

hope this thread is still active. We found this Nishiki Custom Sport in the back of a shed when we bought a house in northern Wisconsin. I have never had a road bike before, only hybrids, so I am interested in finding out if this bike is a worthwhile project for fixing up, updating shifter and brakes, etc, for a first road bike, or if I should just move on. It does have the sentimental value of being "found" on the property we love.

The Serial number is: KS 289396. I understand this makes the bike pre-75. Some pictures are attached. The shifter is Suntour Power Shift.

Sorry, the picture quality isn't great. I can send other pictures if you need any more information.

The Sport was Nishiki's bottom end model during this era and cost about $99 US, depending on the exact year. It's pretty heavy (just over 30 lbs) but is a decent bicycle for the era and price.

My first upgrade would be wheels with aluminum rims. They make a noticeable difference in acceleration, due to the decreased weight and provide better braking, especially in wet weather. My 2nd upgrade would be an aluminum cotterless crankset.

The SunTour (Honor & Spirt?) derailleurs perform well, and you won't save a lot of weight changing them. Brakes should be aluminum, Dia-Compe center-pull and if so, fall into the same category as the rims. However, some good pads will make a notable improvement and you may want to consider new cables with teflon lined housing.

Whether the cost of these upgrades are warranted will have to be your decision. It would probably be less expensive to seek out a used bicycle with aluminum rims and a cotterless crankset.

How did you get it so clean!?!

I bought this Nishiki Sport Mixte this past week. Its G0180 serial number is easy enough to decipher. Its got 24" wheels and is quite small. I'll get all the specs posted up a bit later:

The pic is from the seller's CL ad. I'll get some of my own pics up soon.

For cleaning I used simple green for a starter bath. Nevr-Dull on anodized parts like brake calipers, FD & RD & hubs. Mothers polish on cranks, seat post, stem.
Took the freewheel off and used simple green and a brush. # 00000 steel wool on spokes, rims & brake levers.
Polishing compound on the frame and then wax.

The brake hoods were a disaster. They were like dried on bubble gum and had to be kind of picked off a little at a time and then used the fine steel wool and polish. I decided to go w/o new hoods to keep things simple, as in cheap and no waiting for them to arrive in the mail.

Here's a before pic of the brake hoods.

Thanks for the information, T-Mar.

Based on what you said, I will probably just clean and tune the bike for now and keep it available as a second. When I learn more about how to work on bikes myself, I will take on some improvements. This forum has given me an interest in Nishiki.

I recently got a Colnago "rebranded" Nishiki. Ik don't think it's rebranded by Colnago but who knows. The decals seem to be very old.

Anyway... The serial number is completely different then others. The serial is "EH100293"

Pictures:

https://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...nago_decal.jpg

It's completely built up with Suntour apart from the brake levers which are Dura Ace.
Can anybody tell me anything about this bike?

O, I live in Holland (The Netherlands).

The E suffix serial numbers turn up infrequently, however it apparently indicates a European model. The fact that cable ares routed above the bottom bracket shell would mean it's a 1978 as opposed to 1988. The presence of shifter bosses would indicate something higher up the line as would the sloping crown fork. Unfortunately the European models would not necessarily be the same as the US or Canadian models. Pending further pics it could be the equivalent of an ONP, Superbe or Comp.

Are the codes on the SunTour components circa 1978? Could you post an overall, drive side pic and one of the seat stay lug and rear dropouts? TIA.

While this is no definite year identifier in the WS serial numbers, it should be about 1974. It's a 26" Lightweight Coaster Model. Before you ask, yes, that is the proper model name. Apparently, they weren't very imaginative with the model names on bicycles that weren't 10 speeds. Thxs for contributing to the thread.

Great, thanks!

Here are the pictures of the rear dropout (not readable) and the seat stay lug.
I will make some new pictures tomorrow.

Based on the new pics, it does not appear to be an ONP. However, I note that the seat post is severely undersize for the tubing, as the slot is almost pinched shut. What size is the current post?

Found something to identify the frame with. The bottom rear tubes have a kind of aerodynamic form without dents. Haven't seen this yet...

mmm... The superbe has the same rear forks:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ga_muel...79245/sizes/o/
But this one has different cable guides on the top tube and it's also a '78.

T-Mar-

I just picked up a Nishiki Prestige, looks like a 1985 to me.

Serial number is WE07 490 (the 490 is stamped below the WE07)
It has the Kawamura hand-made marking, and is Tange 2 Cro-Mo with a Tange fork.
Suntour GT-IV forged dropouts, with Suntour Cyclone FD and RD and SL.
Brakes are Dia-Compe 400, BL are Dia-Compe Aero Gran Compe 250.
Crank is Sugino VP, pedals are Sugino PD-1000, and seat stem is Sugino.
I can't tell what the bars or bar stem are.
Hubs are Weinman, as are the rims, but the rear rim is bent. Freewheel is a Shimano.

Alex

I thought of a question: if I have it painted, is there any way to replace the logos and lettering? It looks like that stuff is painted on to me.

I'm pretty sure this is a 1986 model, manufactured in late 1985. Do you have a pic? BTW, the wheels are almost certainly replacements.

I haven't taken any photos yet...I was in such a rush when I got home that I took the wheels off and hung it on a rack to get looking it over. I'll post some photos of the frame, SN, components, etc. as is. I should get home in time to do that today.

Its a bit of a mess, as the BL hoods look like Wrigley that has been on the bottom of my shoe, and I took the tattered bar tape and wheels off already. I haven't really cleaned it that well because I want to take all the bits off and really scrub it all down. But before and after photos might be good.

Can you tell me about the logos? If I were to repaint, any way to replace the name, model and Kawamura stuff?

I just noticed something when looking at tmh657's international:

Different markets got head badges and different parts?

Assuming that what's on our bikes is stock, The American market received better equipped bikes than the Canadian market; or there was a change in the specs mid year?

Again, assuming his bike came with the Cyclone FD, and mine with the Vx FD. My International also has Power Ratchets.
