I found a front hub in my local co-op a couple of weeks ago for $5. I spent some time polishing it up on my hub polishing jig, earlier this week. It came out ok so I put it on the bench for another BFer who would need it Like AndyK who asked for one a few months back. This is it:

The last week I bought a hub off Flea Bay that was listed NOS for parts, cones and races for $14 plus about $10 for shipping. I thought it was another front hub with some shell damage. But this arrived last night:

It was indeed NOS and complete. I now have a set of matched 32* hubs for a restore. Great day from my postal carrier, and a nice surprise. Smiles, MH

It was stuff made in France day!!! Two big boxes, 1st up was a 42 cm ATAX Philippe Franco Italia # D-352 (Gyro bend) handlebar with nice markings.

The second box contained a new pair of black 36 hole Mavic Open Pros.

All in all a great Saturday!!!

GIPIEMME CRONO "AERO" Seat Post

GPM "AERO" style post, 26.4mm, anodized. Getting harder to find, especially in that size.

Red would be nice, but it's not for the Cilo. I have an orange frame for it, only one it will fit unless I shim it for a bigger ST I.D.; easy to do, but I prefer not to.

Hope you had a good new year's start my friend. I'm hoping to be a wee bit more productive, I need to get rid of some giant, for me, 60cm+ frame sets; and finish transplanting parts. Just salvaged another Rossin frame that needs some brazing/solder.

Take care!

Thought I’d post the post that came in today’s post.

A fairly lightweight 27.2mm 3ttt Criterium found cheap on the bay. It’s going on the Benotto frankenbuild...

I got these back from the fabrication shop today! I have tried to replicate the old pedal wrenches from Schwinn as they are no longer available, and I expect mine will eventually wear out. These are long enough to equalize the leverage on a 175 mm crank arm, and the way they are fitted can work for both 14 mm and 15 mm pedals. The fabricator used a high end heliarc welder and wound up using two extra wrenches to gain the distance and maintain the strength of the wrench steel. I'm just wondering if I should use some plasti-coat over the weld sites to prevent rusting. Smiles, MH

Skip,
You will notice I used the older made in USA model wrenches. They are a chrome vanadium mix ( the same as in the Damascus knives) that are difficult to bend. For some time I used the Craftsman line of wrenches because of the warranty, but the wrenches kept getting shorter and the leverage to use them was not there. So I told the rep one day that the pipe needed to get the leverage had to be longer and that is why the wrenches failed. He sighed and agreed with me.
I switched to Mac long wrenches and have not replaced one since. I am currently buying Snap-On as they are the dealers replacing the MAC distributor for me. But any broken tools still go back to Columbus OH for replacement. I find the highest quality tools are from the New Britain foundry and are branded as New Britain, Mac, Blackhawk, Proto, and Williams. But in today's wrenching world they are almost always pawn shop finds.
The fabricator said he put these to the test of locking them in the vise and yanking on them with all of his strength. He is a pretty stout bugger so I think they will work. And they only need to overcome a few tight pedals. As always the aluminium arm will strip out first. But if they do the job, then it will be great. Smiles, MH

I got some bar wrap today for the renewal of some really bad tape.

Gios, Bianchi and a few others will be in line for a new "taping" session.
Best, Ben

A sweet Sturmey Archer S2 kickshift hub. Will probably come in useful for a singlespeed commuter or a project for a friend some day.

That wouldn't void the warranty. I brought back a screwdriver once, shank completely gone, and walked out with a brand new screwdriver. I've seen guys exchage ratchets with completely @$$ploded heads. My wife (yes) broke the head on an HF Pittsburgh long (24"?) 1/2" drive breaker bar. They replaced it, no questions asked. There's nothing in the wording of either warranty excluding abuse.

Gotta wonder why this was done, however. Yes, you get the leverage, but you get the same slipping a cheater pipe over the wrench. It doesn't make the head any stronger. And yes, I broke the open-end on a 15mm Craftsman ('80s US made chrome vanadium) combo on a particularly recalcitrant pedal. That's when I ordered a Park PW-4 (the "big" asymmetrical wrench), which got 'er done. Still haven't exchanged out that Craftsman. Alas, it'll no doubt be replaced with something made in China.
