Yes, the market for C&V bikes is waning. Anyone who wouldn't agree to that is either not paying attention or possibly just in a combative mood. 
This is partially why I sold my '68 Orange Krate (for $1400) late last year. The market of grown up "kids" who wanted/still want these bikes is thinning. The younger generations do not care much about them... so lower value.
The market realities are what they are... neither good nor bad. Good thread.

Lots of interesting comments here, but I find it amusing that this whole discussion has basically started over a sample size of one Richard Sachs that sold for a deceptively low price.
...and not one reply yet has noted that the builder himself gave a few compelling reasons why it didn't bring a higher price.

An interesting thing a used bike dealer told me was that demand and prices for vintage MTBs was going up. For a long time, I used to recommend a rigid vintage MTB as a "do anything bike" for someone wanting cheap transportation, but I wonder if the secret's been out on that for a bit, and people who used to get old road bikes as transportation are now shifting to old hybrids and MTBs.

Anyway, with that being said, I picked my vintage road bike up this year for $650 which still seems a bit cheap given the condition.

No fear, don't worry about your beloved rusty Poojoey Pxxxxxx. In the big picture, the number of enthusiast and actual vintage lightweights is very small. No matter the numbers or valuation, its not going to disappear. We like our old schtuff.

We all have had our good deals, gifts in some cases. Not too many people selling the prize of the fleet. So, giving another collector a chance to upgrade on something you feel is mediocre is about the best thing that's happened in the vintage world.

Even though c&v prices seem way down, you can't really tell by scouring a few big markets on craigslist. People are still trying to unload tons of crap for exorbitant prices. I offer Spokane, Wa as an example. Ridic.

Thanks to Instagram and another forum, there's a huge vintage MTB cult following known as 26inlife and xbiking that dedicate themselves to refurbishing 26 inch bikes and the like. The most popular ones are StumpJumpers, Rock Hoppers, Hard Rock etc from Specialized, a few GTs and so on. The agegroup are mostly millenials. Tbh I would rather spend $400 making a vintage MTB an all around utility bike and load it with the best parts rather than spend it on a mid end vintage road bike with DT shifters going for the same price.

I still really like the nicer vintage MTBs: thumb shifters, can handle almost any tire, racks, easy gearing, whatever. Nice!
+100 To.a later comment: Some sellers just don't realize it yet, you see examples on many C/L and F/B Marketplace, as well as the valuation forum here. Hence my interest in starting a thread on dose of reality, recent actual sales.

It annoys me because a lot of good people on here get worked up and argue with each other over evaluations that we already basically know from each other.
And...well You have amazing restored bicycles that I have seen and admired on here for years. I mean no beef with you or anyone.

I feel like a similar thread to this pops up every 3-6 months. And every time, for 2-3 years now, it's been pointed out the vintage market is plummeting. Lots of specific examples shown, strong evidence.
I don't dispute it. I'm taking weeks, sometimes months longer to sell stuff, to the point I can't buy anything anymore and seriously need to purge stuff. Sucks! But it is what it is.
I'm still finding deals too. But they're few and far between. And usually I get beat to the punch.

Those of us who were riding these bikes when they were new have already seen the market for bikes with downtube shifters and toe clips plummet once. Hopefully this time I'll be wise enough to take advantage of the low prices!

I bought four bikes last Saturday. A Devinci comfort bike that is brand new basically,never ridden,maybe two years old. A 1984 Stumpjumper. A late 70 s Maruishi roadace 707 all 600 Arabesque.And another road bike that appears to be a Titanium build from about 1990 ,mostly Dura Ace. I am covering all bases!!! Paid $20 for the stumpy,$50 for the Arabesque beauty and $75 for the titanium bike. I just had to tell somebody.
