I had made a couple of changes that I wanted to try out, but it rained all day until close to midnight. Then I decided to go for a spin anyway. If I didn't have to get up early for work I'd do this more often. Nice and quiet. The only sound was from the Pasela treads on the wet pavement.

I had planned to do the Worst Day of the Year Ride in Portland today, but that got canceled due to bad weather (because Portland). But I'm trying to build up my fitness for early spring, so I decided to HTFU and brave the treacherous conditions. It was rough, but I managed.



In all fairness, apparently some parts of Portland got as much as five inches of snow on Saturday. I'm not sure how we dodged it on the west side, but I rode 40 miles on completely dry pavement.

Just look at all the snow (on the mountains in the distance)! Also, the puddle in the foreground is partially frozen.



Eventually I even found some snow.



From my house, I rode out to the Fern Hills Wetlands. I've taken a lot of pictures of this ride, but the wetlands, being wetlands, are alive and constantly changing.



One of the nice things about the wetlands, apart from the natural beauty, is that they have a brick and mortar restroom with potable water 20 miles from my house. This year they've upped their game even more.



Finally, someone left this on one of the tables and it struck me as somehow aesthetically pleasing.

Going to a 32 from a 28. (with 46/30 up front). Building another serious climber (Centurion) triple 50/45/28 with a seven speed 12 to 34 freewheel. I'm determined to climb this mountain from the saddle! Even though it will be about 1/2 walking speed.

Beautiful afternoon in Foat Wuth. I was supposed to be resting and recuperating but hadn't ridden outdoors in a week and couldn't waste the afternoon. I knew if I got "properly dressed" for the road bike I'd push myself too hard. So I just wore what I had on -- soft soled walking shoes, jeans and hoodie -- and told myself I was just gonna take an easy spin around the block. The Look pedals would keep me honest -- those things poke the feet painfully in regular shoes if I mash too hard.

And I wanted to take another try with the classic Scott aero bars @texaspandj sent me last week. The one day I tried 'em last week was way too windy and my balance was off. It's gonna take more gettin'-used-to -- not only balance, but bike setup and improving my neck and shoulder flexibility and strength.

Only 12 miles or so at a leisurely pace but very pleasant.

First ride since January 6 yesterday.

We had an unexpected sunny 45° day yesterday, so took the chance and ducked out of work a bit early to try and squeeze a ride in.

I took my fendered bike out, and boy am I glad that I did. The roads were soaked with snow and ice melt, and there were still quite a few places that had significant amounts of slush covering the road. Mostly on the east-west running roads with trees lining the south side.

Overall a nice, quick 10 mile loop. But it felt so good after not having any good riding weather for so long!

The wintery mix stopped and I got home in time to beat sunset. Took a quick ride through the Chestnut Hill neighborhood and got a little dirty in Wissahickon Park. Rear derailleur gave me some grief while trying to climb my way back out of the valley. As if I don't hate climbing enough already.

My wife and daughter are away for the weekend on a girls' trip, so I'm going to try to get in as much riding as I can this weekend. After work, I took advantage of a brief window of rainlessness before sunset--a quick 20-mile out & back on the Bay Bridge to Treasure Island.

Nice weather today, but the days are short, so lights are still a good idea. At an Amstel river crossing south of Amsterdam, just before sunset:

I was able to squeeze in 25 miles between removing a 90+ year old, permanently fused, tub drain (used the stuck seat post method of cutting it out and folding it in on itself), and hanging a new back porch light, where there we no existing provisions for mounting it on stucco.

Even though it was chilly and windy, it was a welcome relief to see the sun, be outside and not having to "creatively solve" any home repair projects!

Sunny and in the 60s today (is it really February?). I took my recent budget build Univega for a meandering tour around the neighborhood with daughter in tow. First real ride since probably November. Still needs a few stem height adjustments before I do a final cable cut/crimp. Felt good to ride again, looking forward to spring.

Hope you don't mind more photos of my De Rosa...I got out for a nice 40+ miles in the hills above Berkeley and Oakland. I did one of my favorite go-to loops along the crest of the East Bay hills on Grizzly Peak Blvd./Skyline Road, and then into Moraga by way of Redwood Rd. and back to Berkeley via Wildcat Canyon for those who know the area. The skies were mostly clear but there were some scattered showers throughout the ride, and I got drenched with a heavy, cold rain from about miles 10-20.

She needs to get used to the slightly more racy setup, but as she broke a number of Strava PR's on her first ride of the season, I think I'm OK.

Riding a bike to Treasure Island! Will wonders never cease! I was "stashed" at the Pubic Affairs Office at the beginning of Desert Storm before getting sent out to my ship. Office was right be the entrance gate. That was a good job while at lasted ...

Love all the pics by the way, but the rain squall over the GG might be my favorite along with the De Rosa.

This is 2 days ago when there was a gap in the rain and the cold. Shakedown cruise for this year's Eroica bike on the dirt/gravel roads of Western Albemarle County. A very wet 2018, early 2019 has washed away most of the gravel, leaving nice packed dirt for most of the ride. I felt very smug as I encountered mountain bikers with their very fat tires and disc brakes.

Meanwhile, back along the Ohio River, I figured an MTB would help me "bolt" out of the house and get some pedal time on dreary days.

Wrong. 2 miles in.... so I detoured.

More miles on the De Rosa this morning, venturing east from Berkeley into the Contra Costa backroads, towards Martinez by way of Port Costa and back--about 5500' feet of climbing and ~60 miles.

This steep little climb is referred to as Pig Farm Climb.



A house along Franklin Canyon Rd with an interesting pirate-themed scene in the front yard. Yar, there be treasure!



Eventually, I made it to the tiny, quirky town of Port Costa along the Carquinez Strait for a coffee and pastry.



Followed by a winding stretch on a trail that runs along the Carquinez Strait, here with a view of the Benitez-Martinez Bridge off in the distance.
