The wife and I took a very nice ride down to Coney Island on our nearly-matching Motobecanes, had a beer at Ruby's on the Boardwalk. Only about 12 or 13 miles R/T, but a very nice way to spend an afternoon.

Went to a rather excellent drama production put on by my oldest daughter's class and then decided to take the long way to test the Ultra 7 block I built up for my folder... hit 50kmh on the descent into the valley with very little effort and then decided to see how well the bike could climb on it's 25 gear inch low and passed a few guys slogging it out on their mountain bikes.

Did not even need the bailout gear to climb this...



Drive is a 40/48/53 with it's new 12-30 Suntour Ultra 7 freewheel... range is 25 - 89 gear inches which is perfect for a bike that was built up to be a tourer but thinks he's a little rocket. The SRAM X7 has enough capacity to handle the 53/30 with room to spare and it shifts like warm butter.



Powdercoating was postponed until next week so I have a few more days to play with the little fella before I tear him down... I so love this bike which is now 40 years old.

I had a pair of wisdom teeth pulled early this week and it left me kinda out of it and didn't get to post my weekend ride. You couldn't ask for better weather and temps for a Memorial Day weekend in PHX. Sunday morning, I took off towards Usery Mtn. and the Salt River as my destination. A total of 32 miles round trip, with a climb of 'King Kong', the nickname given to the backside of Usery Rd. by the local roadies. I tried it back in January, and was ready to see if my fitness improved, as I was pretty wasted last time. I ended up still having to pull over for a rest stop. Maybe a granny ring next time.

No photos since I rode on the boring interstate today - 118.5 miles on the Spectrum, ride time 6 hrs 1 minute and a 19.7 mph avg. Longest ride I've done since 1997 since kids arrived on the family scene. Didn't hurt to have a 5 - 8 mph tailwind to crossing tailwind much of the ride.

Got my metric century for June out of the way early. 73 miles, colder at 65-75, sunny a little breezy.
I went on some new roads in Glocester and Foster, which were all nice.



Durfee Hill Rd



This road is awesome, I'll have to come back in the dog days of summer because it is nice and shady. Durfee Hill is the second highest point in RI. The elevation is embarrassingly low so I'll keep it to myself.

I took a little lunch break at a historical cemetery and after leaning my bike against a wall glanced next to me and saw this big old snake skin sticking out of the stone wall.



I probably passed about 20-30 historical cemeteries today. Virtually every rural road in RI has one marked on it. This cemetery wasn't particularly nice, but I did take a pretty good pic of this stone.



I flatted about 20 miles in, so I wasn't feeling super confident in my tire pressure, sic I only did about 2 miles of dirt roads.

47 miles on the vintage tandem. Drizzle and wet roads when we started. Spent 20 minutes cleaning debris off the bike when we got home. Still, it was a good ride.

Just after our lunch stop we stopped to lend our vintage Zefal Solibloc pump to a guy who'd left his pump at home then picked a piece of glass in his rear tire. Our lunch stop:

The Leisure Ride was more leisurely this time. A husband, wife, and son (age 11) who joined us last week, on a REALLY un-leisurely ride, returned. They weren't scared off. Ride leader apologized for the previous week's ride, but everyone seemed to really enjoy it.

This was only the second time out for the 11 year old on his new/used MTB, for anything other than just hops around his neighborhood or to school. He did great last week and did great this week. Dad worked with him at times and advised when to shift up or down, but he's really getting the hang of it and doing fine.

Another new rider joined us on a tandem by himself. He normally rides with his sister, but it was just him on that tandem. I didn't notice him huffing and puffing. Did just fine.

I shall endeavor to bring a camera on the next ride.

I suppose kissing on the steps of B.H. Carroll Memorial Building on the campus of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary would be a scandal to some Baptists. They might think we were dancing.

13 miles tonight, including some hilly areas in Wedgwood and South Hills. My honey did great.

Rode a century on Sunday from Louisville into southern Indiana, looped around, back into town, then west of town and back. Gorgeous weather and friendly people that made for a really good day.









Did a 30 miler last night through several ritzy neighborhoods. Snapped a shot of the bike as I headed out from the LBS after stopping for an extra blinky, but didn't take any photos of the scenery.

Great Thread!

I went for a 45 mile ride today along many of the rail to trail systems in Pennsylvania. Took a few photos and including them here. Among the photos is another pic taken while riding on the Allegheny River Trail, Rockland Station waterfall. So this is a mix from a 30 miler on Sunday and a 45 today. One was on the Allegheny River Trail and the other is a local Clarion-Little Toby RTT. The trails have some long tunnels also. Enjoy

Interestingly enough. the day i rode up to this spot. There were a group of college kids and you guessed it....the females were nakey and swimming. unfortunately for me, The friend that was with me made a bit more noise and the scurried for their clothing...oh well. The view was still beautiful. This was the first time i rode my bicycle up to the area. I also have photos in the below album with pics of the same falls in the winter.

My De Rosa's drive train is starting to skip, so I blew the dust off my Cinelli sc and rode 38 miles today. It was 75 degrees and spitting rain when I started, but it cleared up and was nice and sunny for second hour.



I did a couple of miles on a dirt road. Cinelli handed it just fine. Sorry about the tires. I had Vittoria open corsas, but they were old and bald so I put these two mismatched spares on for now. Cinelli is a newer neuron frameset, light and subtle, I think a touch small for me.



I'm going to switch wheels on the De Rosa to a chorus tubular wheelset soon so bye bye to those ugly Mavic Heliums. (Although they have served me well).

Never apologize for making do with tires. By the end of the season, I have been known to ride some pretty thread bare hook hangers.

OK, I rode 53 miles on the Cinelli today. beautiful day 75-80 and sunny. I finally pushed it too far on the dirt roads and flipped over the handlebars today on a technical descent. Skinned my knee, wounded my pride, but both rider and bike survived.

Garden variety dirt road, I ride this on the regular. Google map and the RI cycling map say this road exists. I usually check these old dirt roads out at home on map quest nowadays after going down several dead end roads that were supposed to connect up with other roads but are now overgrown, or private property or whatever. Map quest doesn't have this road listed at all, but on my last few rides in this area I noticed there was a street sign for it. Welch Hollow goes through the back end of a park, so I thought it would at least be a double track maybe a full on dirt road.

Unfortunately the road started to deteriorate into a loose chunky mess that looked more like a stream bed than a road. I figured, well I'll ride through, it's only 2-3 miles until it connects with a known road. I ride cyclocross bikes, I used to ride rigid mtb, no worries.



I tried to ride Paris-Roubaix style on the far edge but this became untenable and I flipped clipped in. I did a little dance to shake off the pain in my knee and surveyed the situation. The road is named Hollow, so I knew that meant two hills; one down and one up. I was heading down right now which would probably mean a tough technical climb later. I had my speed play road cleats on, which suck to walk in, never mind under these conditions. The cleats tend to jam when I walk on dirt and I didn't like the idea of possibly ripping up my Sidi shoes walking my bike through extended sections. So I packed it in and had to backtrack a mile to the paved road.

When I spotted this field of uncut grass and buttercups, it was a perfect backdrop during a perfect day to ride!





Brings out the green and the yellow in my Sports Tourer build. Can't beat a great ride in NH.

We managed about 20 miles on the tandem today. No pics though. Played a wedding Friday in Stowe, VT and a rel show at the 1794 Meetinghouse in New Salem, MA, so we were running on short sleep. Still, it was a good day.

I rode over the North Cascades highway with some friends the weekend.

It was one cold wet slog up to Washington Pass. Yea, it sucked.

Conditions improved on the long downhill glide into Winthop over on the East side pushed along by some strong tailwinds..
We spent the night in this large farmhouse.

Sunday morning we were rewarded with sunshine and some great riding choices before returning home.
