Fun thread. I'm a fan of the Great American Songbook, and on my Ipod playlist, about half the songs are before 1950 and only a couple are after 1980 (see my BF profile).

The #1 song on my birthdate was Goodnight, Irene by the Weavers (with Pete Seeger). That site also links to the day you were conceived (Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer by Gene Autry).

I was born under a good 'song' sign: "Rock around the Clock" by Bill Haley and the Comets.

Coincidence or supressed memory?

I'd say my favorite 50's Rock tune is At the Hop by Danny and the Juniors.

As the pilosopher, Pink Floyd, said, "The dreams of an old man are the deeds of a young man." But at my age, there is no suppressed memory...what's gone is long gone.

"I'm Making Believe" by The Ink Spots and Ella Fitzgerald

According to another source it was "Don't Fence Me In" by Bing Crosby and Andrews Sisters

Not sure I've ever heard either one. Definitely can't remember the words or the tune if I have.

Oooh, Oooh...Call on me. I recognize the second (no Googling):

"Give me land, lots of land under starry skies above;
"Don't fence me in.
(...forgot...)
"Let me ride to the ridge where the West commences;
"Gaze at the moon until I lose my senses.
"Can't look at hovels and I can't stand fences;
"Don't fence me in."

Not too bad:

Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above
Don't fence me in
Let me ride in the wide open country I love
Don't fence me in
Let me be by myself in the evening breeze
And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees
Send me off forever, but I ask you please
Don't fence me in

Just turn me loose
Let me straddle my old saddle
Underneath the western sky
Let me wander over yonder
'Til I see the mountains rise

I want to ride to the ridge where the west commences
Gaze at the moon until I lose my senses
Can't look at hobbles and I can't stand fences
Don't fence me in

Depends if number one ranking means best seller or most played on radio and juke boxes.
Best seller, Vaya con Dios, Les Paul and Mary Ford, most played, You, you you, Ames Brothers.

They must not have been playing it in the delivery room, though, or maybe I was too preoccupied. It doesn't sound familiar.
