Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lights and out front mounts

It's time to put the lights back on. I'm not thrilled about giving up space on my bars. Thinking about getting an out front mount, probably the Enve one. Can you attach a light to the bottom of these mounts, securely? Or failing that are there lights that use the quarter turn mount?

I have a helmet mount, and my commuter has a mount at the fork crown. I know people who like the out front mounts and they seem to work very well. Just depends on what you want.
I have to find where I put that helmet mount for the summer though...

I mount lights about halfway down my forks. Depending on forks you may have to make an adapter to convert round to fork shape. Lower is better.

I am a big fan of out front mounted lights and use a Barfly Road Max 4 with Light & Motion Urban 800. The Urban light uses the GoPro mount. Using the GoPro mount allows the vertical angle of the light to be adjusted. Below is my bike.

A universal style holder for lights comes with the Barfly mount but I have not used it.

I also use a helmet mounted light with the bar light.

The Barfly universal mount looks really promising.

I've never used a GoPro before, how does their mount work? Can it go on the bottom of the computer mount, like in your first pic and 69chevy's?

What I like about the Enve mount is that it attaches directly into the stem, leaving you with all the room on your bars.

Combo mounts with GPS and camera (most often GoPro) are the most common, but there are a handful of companies (and a number of individuals with 3D printers) that are making GoPro adapters that'll fit on to the quick release mounts for some lights. Just do a search for 'NiteRider Lumina GoPro adapter' or the like.

The mount is for a Garmin on top and GoPro on the bottom. GoPro mounts are tabs with holes that a bolt goes through allowing for tilt adjustments.

If you have an Enve stem then that mount is sweet. I'd be jealous.

Yes, the GoPro mount attaches to the bottom of the computer mount. Lots of accessories such as the lights pictured use GoPro mounts.

A GoPro mount itself is just a dovetail that slides together. A screw goes through it to hold it in place. I replaced the 3mm hex head screw from the Barfly with a Phillips head because mine stripped after a while.

I'm using a Light & Motion Urban 800 + GoPro adapter + K-Edge Garmin mount, and I love it!

Mount is extremely secure. Light can be easily adjusted up/down/left/right

Light is easily detached via thumbscrew

So I can buy a GoPro mount and attach it to the bottom of the Enve computer mount? (I don't have the Enve mount yet - maybe it would be obvious if I were looking at it.)

Thanks for the info and for putting up with me.

Is the enve stem mount a universal fit, or do you need an enve stem? I thought I read that the bolt spacing was different.

I misunderstood.

By "Enve mount" I thought you meant a mount made by Barfly for Enve stems. Barfly makes direct stem mount for Fizik and 3T stems and that is what confused me.

I did not know that Enve makes their own mount and eventually saw the litle ENVE logo on the mount in your picture. You will have to contact Enve to determine if they make a GoPro style mount which attaches to the one you pictured. I don't know. It will have to attach to the bottom some proprietary way which only Enve would know.

If you have a Fizik or 3T ARX II stem then a Barfly direct stem mount would work. I don't know if K-Edge makes something similar. There are lots of Rube Goldberg setups out there.

One thing to consider about direct stem mounts is that they typically can't be angled up.

--------

I lust after this setup. Fork mounted Bontrager IONs with ANT+ remote control.

I might be interested if they did this with their Direct Mount models (which work with 3T and Fizik stems).
