I've been using chocolate milk for recovery, but have yet to find a brand that is really good. Nesquick is disgusting, Hershey syrup is not much better. Ovaltine is OK. The best "recipe" I've tried is Good Value 1% chocolate milk (from Walmart) with a scoop of Ovaltine.

Any favorites? Recipes?

eas chocolate protein powder in 2% milk. double scoop with like 10 or 12 oz of milk.

Charlie, when you get picky about chocolate milk, you've officially become high maintenance.

Personally, when it comes to chocolate, I love it all.

Use quality coco (like Giardelli) and you'll never go back to the instant. For me, I'm not that picky. I just go with Nestles Syrup (the powdered stuff is awful).

My post-ride drink must have alcohol in it to take the edge off...

I buy the Horizon organic chocolate milk by the case at Costco.

They have good flavor, don't need to be refrigerated, and they use real sugar rather than HFCS.

I'm a young guy - and this will sound odd - but its very true - I lived thru the "chocolate milk boom" of the past 12 or so years.

When I was 10-11 yrs old, the only chocolate milk you could buy was that United chocolate milk in the paper carton. To this day if you can find it, it is the best. Companies started to join in and put it in plastic bottles. Most of the ones at first were good because it was still the old recipes. Still oldish school chocomilk. It was always oldish school chocomilk or YooHoo.

More recently, companies have come up with this new recipe of chocolate milk that neither tastes like chocolate or milk. It's similar to chocolatey liquified chalk and that stuff tasted gross. I blame it on Milk Chugs. Those punks ruined the chocomilk industry. The new generation got hooked on this plastic chocolate milk and have since moved on to trying to replicate the taste of a chocolate milkshake - all thi fake creamyness. The stuff is gross.

This is why you can't find anything good - because there isn't anything good.

Premade - find it in a paper carton and you're golden.
Powder - I've never had Ovaltine, mainly because of the stupid name. Quik never was that good, but it works.
Liquid - Hershey's syrup is good stuff. Ironically, Hershey's premade chocoplasticmilk is horrid.

Be wary of pre-made chocolate milk. Many daries and grocery chains will take slightly sour milk and mask the sour flavor with chocolate. The "soft drink" style stuff in the plastic bottle like yohoo are "safer" but disgusting. Rule of thumb: if it doesn't have to be refrigerated it isn't good.

For hot chocolate, I prefer Giardelli.

For cold chocolate milk, I like Quik. Don't understand why you don't care for it.

Most people don't know that the distinctly "sour" taste of Hershey's milk chocolate comes from using sour milk in the mix.

Here's a trick I learned working at coffee shops way back when. Put some powdered cocoa (or some non-crappy unsweetened powdered cocoa and sugar) in the bottom of your glass. Add a little bit of boiling water and stir thoroughly. Then add your milk and stir again. Works great, and if you use the unsweetened stuff you can make it as sweet or bitter as you want, and use whatever sweetener you want.

i just take milk and add tons of hersheys and stir that up until the color is mildly dark. i don't understand whats wrong with that combination. it's a gold mine of flavor.

Yeah, if you're into the flavor of sugar/corn syrup. I like chocolate - not Hershey's chocolate, REAL chocolate! Hershey's is the McDonald's fast food version of chocolate.

good tip, add some vanilla extract and ghiradelli syrup = good stuff, but hard to make.

the best chocolate milk? A big cup of milk ... a heaping tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa .... 3 tablespoons of sugar ... and a hand blender.

Takes just a couple of moments to make, and it'll be the best chocolate milk you can have. You can make it as milky, chocolatey, sweet as you'd like.

So I say forget the mixes, make your own. Only take a few extra moments and it's waaaaay better and waaaay richer!

i wonder if cadburry makes any cocoa powders. that chocolate is rediculously amazing. there's this little old lady british chocolate shop by where i live, and they sell all the best english chocolates. i might have to check there. nothing like getting cadburry eggs year round. mmmmmmm

+1.. we used to get chocolate milk from a diary in the glass bottle.. whole milk.. super thick it was like drinking a pudding pop.. so freaking good.

Uh, some milk and a couple tablespoons of chocolate syrup. Midnight Moo from TJ's is good, some stuff I have from Whole Foods is good too. To be honest, Hershey's syrup is good too.

Mix it yourself. Much easier to have milk on hand, and not have to worry about a whole separate container of choco milk.

i dont like chocolate milk, but i drink about a half gallon a day of regular 2%.
