B.B. size for 1983 miyata 1024 grand touring

I'm rebuilding my 1983 miyata 1024 grand touring. I'm updating the components to more modern tech. I'm having trouble finding the right bottom bracket size. Does anyone know where to find the spec's for this frame?

I dont, but one thing to do , assuming you are going to put a square taper in , is to remove the cranks arms and measure the length of the axel, as this will be important to know for buying a new bb, also assuming you are going to use the same crankset.

what are you thinking of putting on it, crankset wise?
being 1983 and japanese, one would think it uses standard threading and shell diameter and all that, but do find out, good luck getting the proper info.

the mid range shimano UN-26 or 25 works fine, and the un-55 is a better quality one at a reasonable price also.

but then again, myabe you are going to go outboard bearings and cranksets.

If using a triple my guess is that it will be 118 to 122mm or longer. Certainly not anything under 118mm. It will take some experimentation with the different lengths and crank. Not sure any specs for vintage cranks are available, or reliable.

If square taper, spend the little extra and get the UN55 from Shimano. Nearly indestructible.

Yup, I had a un55 that was on my old mtb , used commuting and a bit of touring, for a good 10 years, figured it must have had 20,000kms on it, and was still useable, but at that point just put a new one in.
Great value bb. Has the metal loose cup, not plastic, used to any way.

Bikes: Some silver ones, a red one, a black and orange one, and a few titanium ones

What do you mean by “the right bottom bracket size”? If you are talking about the cups that thread into the bottom bracket, that is an English bottom bracket. It’s size is 1.370" x 24 TPI (threads per inch). The bottom bracket is 68mm wide. The width of the spindle is going to depend on the crank. It would be best to measure the spindle length on the existing bottom bracket and start from there.

If you are trying to use an external bottom bracket, you’ll need at least 2 spacers.
