Zunow Z-1 Saga Begins **Pic Heavy**

So you can read the history of the bike here. https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...made-a-mistake

These are so pics I snapped while cleaning it. there are a lot of chips in the paint and decals are pretty rough. First thing is first. Address the rust. I have not had any luck finding any oxalic acid/wood bleach locally so I am looking at other ways to take care of the rust. Especially on the chrome front fork. I think I'll have it all built up in about a week and will update with pics along the way.

I cant see the extent to which the rust has invaded but I would start with some naval jelly/polish/wax.

I was under the impression Naval Jelly was not to be used near painted surfaces.

Where do you live? Pretty much every Sherwin Williams paint store sells OA as wood bleach. This has been reported here many times. Do not waste time going to your local big box home store. Most of them I have been to do not carry wood bleach.

Correct.

Caution: Wipe off painted surfaces immediately, Naval Jelly will remove paint. The rust treatment should not remain on a surface for more than 15 minutes. Rinse Naval Jelly rust treatment off with fresh water. Repeat if any rust remains. Leave rust treatment on longer for heavily rusted areas. Protect with Naval Jelly Rust Preventer or prime & paint within 24 hours (Naval Jelly does not provide long term protection to stop rust from rust reoccurring).

I for one would realy think twice before trying to get too aggresive on the pait it is original and not in realy bad shape. You should try and leave it origanl paint wise if at all possible. A good cleaning and some minor detailing and wax would be better on this bike than trying to get it perfect and risking ruining this paint job.

I've never seen the paint around a chip I was treating ever react to naval jelly.

The Sherman Williams near me told me they no longer carry OA since it wasn't a big seller. They dug a dusty container out from the back room for me and sold it to me at a discount...

That paint scheme is awesome, what are you building it up with?

Most Ace Hardware stores stock OA I know the one in my nieghborhood does but you have to ask for it and show ID.

^^^ +1 ... I bought Savogran brand Wood Bleach at my local Ace for ~$12 for a 12 oz tub. Worked wonders on my Kobe restoration.

Pro (well, amateur) tip when handling it ... wear plastic gloves.

I am rebuilding it with what it had on it when I bought it a couple weeks ago. Shimano 600.

oooooh my favorite bike-related subject: ZUNOW!!! looking forward to your build. Shimano 600 is a great choice, the vast majority of Zunows I've seen over the years were built up with 600 group sets.

I think it will function well and be decently aesthetically pleasing. I don't know what year my bike is so I don't know what it was originally built with. I can't find a serial code on it anywhere except the inside of the NDS rear dropout.

I love that colourscheme, and Zunows in general! Grats on your find, and good luck with the build! 600 is perfectly fine for those. Should you change your mind and try something more obscure, i imagine this would look fine with either a suntour superbe, a Mavic or even a Sachs New Success group (come to think of it, it may have its charme to combine japanese craftmanship with german quality... heck, i need another Zunow frame ).
Although, from my experience, careful choice of accessories like cable housings, saddle, handlebar tape and pedals may be more important to the overall impression than spending big $ on a rare-to-find exotic groupset.

I hope you realise you made a promise to all of us by starting this thread I'm looking forward to following your rebuild adventure!

Martin

Agree with this. As for the rust. It does not appear that extensive. You may want to try some Barkeepers Friend, which is a mild oxalic acid (IIRC). You can make a paste of it and apply to the areas. This might work well on the chrome forks. I used this technique on my chrome Lejeune pista with excellent results. It's not going to be perfect, but it will improve. You should then apply some sort of wax to the chrome and touchup on the paint areas. Look into fingernail polish for a match. I took my frame into a store once to match fingernail polish.
