Official Trek DS owners thread

It's the 65mm version. I had my LBS order and install it. Definitely noticed the ride quality difference compared to the Suntour coil spring fork. I'm not sure why Trek didn't choose to use the Suntour air spring version for the DS4.

I stopped at my local Trek dealer today since I heard that they finally got a shipment in and found that they had a number of DS's, but no DS4s. When I asked, I was told that they have no idea of the ETA for DS4s and that as far as they can see the schedule -- up to a year ahead -- the DS4 has no listed date of availability. Anyone know what's going on?

Noticed on Scott Bikes page as well that the Sub Cross 10 and 20 was on the web site for a few weeks and now off. Called the LBS and found that enough people put money down on them that they are sold out for the model year.
You can actually IM Trek on their web site. Their customer service personal should be able to tell you about any updates on the DS4.

Thinking of getting a used 2012 Trek DS 8.3 bike on CL. Owner is asking $200.00. Looks to be in decent shape. Is that a good bike for Winter commute? That's what I'm in the market for. Any advice is appreciated.

Hey guys. I haven't been around much lately. Considering new tires for my '17 DS 3. Still has the stock Bontrager LT2, Hard-Case Lite, 700 x 38c. Looking for something faster I guess. Most of my riding is typically 30 or so casual miles on rail trails. Mix of paved and crushed limestone. I've browsed in the past. Seen some recommendations, but that was a while ago and I didn't bookmark anything. So what's the hot solution these days?

It's 35 minutes long, but I think it's worth the watch. They go into a number of topics, including finding the right pressure (not necessarily related to your question) and how different tire sizes and construction methods and materials influence rolling resistance (which is related to your question).
In short, buying supple tires with quality construction will reduce your rolling resistance and improve your speed. Science and observations are mixed and often contradictory on the topic of size (excluding all other factors), so I consider the narrow vs. wide debate more about personal preference.

Hi Newbie here, just found a used 2013 DS 8.6 for $550, it is in excellent condition. Is it worth the price? Thank you in advance.

I have a 2015 DS 8.6 and just changed from the original LT2 to Schwalbe Marathon GT Tour 700x45c.
These are great. Add a bit of weight, but the wider tire rolls well on pavement, asphalt, gravel and dirt.
Those original 38c LT2s were prone to slip on turns while on gravel. They have a nice reflective stripe that looks good too.

Also, a heads-up: there were two recalls -both in 2015, I believe-, first on the forks on my 8.5, and then on the front quick-release axle and clamp. All were replaced by the dealer on mine. There should be plenty of related entries on this thread from way back then. You may want to inquire about this if the seller is the original owner. Note, I don't recall whether/how these recalls applied to the 8.6.

Tire width w/fenders
Would any of you DS owners know what would be the widest tire you can run with fenders?
I’m assuming at least a 40, since it comes with 40c tires...

Don't see restriction on this kind of post, a first for me. As a satisfied 2013 8.5 owner, I want to share this, just in case..., especially for anyone in the area, and a taller rider. (I'm 6'1"and ride a 19.5, though I did consider the larger one.) From memory, I think this is a year or two newer than mine. Unfortunately, there is only one photo, and no phone # is posted. Not recommending, because I only know what I see here, but I don't see a lot of good hybrids on sale, and bike shops are out of stock on nearly every bike type. Caveat emptor, but this does LOOK like a very nice offering:

However, I just recently put some Planet Bike 700c x 45mm fenders on my DS 3 with the stock 40c's and they fit well. I'm not sure if these will be quite wide enough to be effective on 45's, but they certainly should fit with good clearance. I'll grab some more pics and post them tonight.

That's good to know. I was considering ordering the Maxxis Rambler tires in 700x45. Are there other recommended tires in 700x45? Then again the GR1s seem to work well on gravel and dirt trails.

Thanks for those photos regarding fenders, karmajack.
I seen later there was a fellow on page 80 of this thread that put some SKS Bluemels 75 on with some modifications to the rear.
I installed a pair of SKS Commuter II fenders (in 65mm width) which provide plenty of room for a ~50mm tire on the front, although I doubt that would work on the rear. Seems like the fender is compressed a bit by the inner width of the seat stays, reducing the effective width of the fender.

From what I've seen, they should fit perfectly on the DS3, I saw a post on another post about the DS3 where someone was using them for a ds4 and I think it has the same wheel size.
