Indoor training - keeping pets safe while riding
I'll start by saying that BF should create an Indoor/Trainer sub-forum ... 2020 has all of us spending more time riding indoors and it'd be nice to have a sub-forum focused on this topic.
UPDATE: I didn't know this forum was under Road Cycling - https://www.bikeforums.net/indoor-st...cycling-forum/
We upgraded trainers this autumn with KICKR v5. I feel that the direct trainers (without wheels), have limited places where a pet could get hurt. I'm interested to hear if anybody else has similar concerns/issues with pet (or small children) while riding a trainer.
In the past we've had wheel-on trainers (Kinetic Road Machine & Cyclops Fluid2), there was a concern about the spinning wheel with the dogs coming and going through space with the trainers. We took some of those hateful yard signs people post on street corners and created a barrier around the wheels and trainers. I can't find a good photo of this hack, here's the best with 2 bikes in the way.
For reference, these are the new Kickers

There is and indoor cycling sub forum in the Road cycling forum.
Thou I think there should be a main forum for it as so many people do it now days.
my Kickr Bike is set up in a small office room in my upstairs. An I shut the door when I am riding. I know not everyone has such a secluded room that one can dedicate to indoor riding.

The subforum is in a weird place - https://www.bikeforums.net/indoor-st...cycling-forum/
To be honest, I've never had a problem with pets/kids and getting too close to the trainer. When I get the trainer out, they know daddy is going to ride angry.
We used to have three cats and one dog, and I have a habit of... being vocal at the end of particularly tough intervals, so the animals would run for the hills as soon as I got set up.

I have two wheels spinning and my dogs have kept their distance on their own. As far as the kids and wife, none of them want to be in the same room with me anyway unless it's the wife walking in to light a candle LOL.

My dog and cat steer clear of my trainer. Don’t like the noise. And now I know who bought the last two Wahoos!

I thinks it's "odd" when I see houses without trainers in the living room.
No animals were harmed.

I'd been a little paranoid that our Kickrs were sold to somebody else and we'd be screwed since we already sold our old trainers. I didn't believe they got it right until I opened the boxes.

I had planned on putting the Kickr Bike in our upstairs master bedroom. But then I daughter moved back in to save money to go back to school. Some day I will have my rolllers and Kicker bike set up together. 😀

Moved here from General Cycling
I don't think our dogs would approach someone on a trainer. My daughter has a wheel-on trainer that she doesn't use much. I have a kickr and i think they are relatively pet safe.

I had very similar concerns, and this is one of the bigger reasons why I chose a Tacx with a virtual fly wheel over the Kickr and its physical flywheel.

put a rolled up newspaper or vacuum near the backend for the pets & a bushel/peck of broccoli or stack of homework from school for the kids.

Seems to me the chain and sprockets are a bigger hazard to canines and felines (and similarly-sized humans!) than the relatively small (relative to wheels) and smooth-surfaced flywheels that are on at least the wheel-on Kickr. Maybe they're bigger on the direct-mount trainers?

Update from the OP: First workout on the Kickr, rode about 90 minutes. Our 10 month old puppy was interested, but never came close enough to be a concern and ended up curling up on a rug nearby to keep an eye on me and the trainer ... she's very suspicious of new things.

You can't mention a puppy and then not post pics of the puppy.

I'm sorry, my bad! I was planning to get a pic of her curled up yesterday, but skipped my brain after climbing Alpe du Zwift.
Here's the remote doorbells recharging in my office. Left to right: Jasper, the Jedi Master boarder collie; Summit, the Jedi Knight flat-coat retriever; and Libby, the 10 month old Padawan cattle dog mix (AKA little s***).
