Not me, but I'm pretty sure this kid (on mtn bike) was "suffering": (Derby Days 4/5 crit from Sat)

Then when we lapped him a 2nd time, people went down and somehow he stayed up:

Oh, and someone caught that crash on video. I was in the front 1/3rd of the pack so we mostly just heard it go down, but I figured it had to do with mtn bike kid.

Man I feel bad for that kid, he probably hates bike racing after that.

One official did question him at the start, but another said something like "He's got a number? Then he paid so he's good to go."

It wasn't so much letting him start that was bad I think, it was just not pulling him the first time he got lapped (which was probably like two laps in). He got pulled after the big pileup, but by then it was too late.

I still feel bad for him though.

My God what is wrong with the organizers of this race? Madonna while racing? This is obviously a lethal mix.

there are a lot of mountain bikers that could probably kick tail in a road race on a mountain bike. A regional MTB pro showed up on a group ride on a mountain bike once and proceeded to put the hurt on everyone. He was running slicks and a a rigid fork though. Note to self - that was a bad day to ride my single speed.

Long story short - it was probably more the rider than the bike he was on that was dangerous.

Agreed. I just did an "unorganized" century and one of the riders that showed was ona mtn. bike with slicks. He does many doubles and the such. He was able to hang no problem and even took pulls at the front at 26-30 mph. I'd be scared to get him on a road bike.

Well, the thing is, there just isn't that much difference when you put slicks on. All you have is weight and aerodynamics. If it's not a long climbing ride, and the guy can tuck down, the equipment will be close enough for a fast group ride or Cat 5 race for sure.

Yeah I think so - it was just his slow speed/being in the way that caused the confusion. Throwing him on a road bike might have gotten him up to 18 mph, but that just ain't gonna cut it.

Still, the mtn bike facet makes for a better story than "some slow kid got in the race." =]

I did a metric century (unorganized) on a '99 Specialized Hard Rock w/slicks. I wasn't particularly fast (I think it took us 3.5 hrs. not including stops) but I had no trouble keeping up with the Madones I was riding with. And they weren't being kind; on the downhills they were out of sight but I'd catch them on the up hills. And the extra weight of the bike made up for my lack of gearing on long slightly down hill runs.

I got a real road bike after that. Maybe this guy will get one, too.

Wow... the video of the crash is just crazy. Hear it go down, a minute later it clears a bit and MTB dude just trots out of there unscathed while one of the riders is on all fours and can't move... he comments below the video that he broke 3 ribs and had a punctured lung. Poor guy.

Obviously he didn't know better, but I am betting he does now. I am sure he had no idea what he was getting himself into. Probably nobody told him what to expect, to stay out of the way, to go home and watch the Tour on TV. In Denver there is a series of practice crits in the Spring with a "freak" category. Which means single speeds, newbie's, mtn bikes on roads. I road in it my first crit and I was told by the race organizers a few basic survival skills beforehand. Mainly to keep others out of danger. I blame the race organizers and I feel bad for the guys who got injured because of this kid.

if you look at the chronology of posts, the crash had not been disclosed at the time of my posting, which you so deftly quoted entirely out of context.

Taken in context, mattm said he felt bad for the guy on the MTB. I said I don't feel bad for him.
