This is a shameless attempt to save the the most advanced civilization inhistory from imminent self destruction by eliminating carbon emission,
dependence on foreign sources of fuel, obesity, hypertension and diabetes.

You're too late. Enjoyed your blog tho.....

It looks like you had fun. Thanks for sharing your tour.

Why isn't there a "Katy trail" in every state?

Michigan is working on it, but there are gaps to fill. Few states have an abandoned rail line like the Katy.

Set up for motorcycling but you could bicycle it:

Great blog. I drove by the Katy once when I was on a business trip. "Next time I'm in town, I'm bringing my bike!" I thought. Unfortunately, I never had to go back there. I would LOVE to ride this trail someday, though.

I hear the powers that be are working on a trail south of the Missouri river. A really great "there and back again" with the Katy

In late June I rode on the Katy trail on a ride put on by Mo State Parks. Great trail and a very nicely organized ride. As stated in the blog the towns along the way are great

Thanks for posting. The Katy is on my list of trails to consider but I'm hesitant because of the weather. Seems like it would be awfully hot in the summer.

Reads like you had a great time.

Ive been lucky enough to have ridden the Katy once one way with a train ride at the end, and four times both ways from the very beginning to the the very end and beyond.
I just find it relaxing to ride without traffic and in(mostly)solitude, though I was run into by a teenager in a group who was looking at his phone once.

Every time I have ridden it I try to stay at different places. It makes the experience a little different each time. Of course you start to get preferred places to stay.
And even though I cook my own food, I try to eat at the various restaurants. Some are good, some not so much.

Michigan actually leads the country in miles converted (even if the article shows Penn has a higher number of trails), but you are right, there are gaps. I ride on an old rail line which has been converted to a half dozen or so separate trails which are sometimes connected, but which also often just dead end at a trail head with the line on the other side of the road a jungly overgrown mess. Even though there are miles and miles of trails, you can't ride most them end to end for any significant distance without having to incorporate connections on city streets. Long term plan is for them to all be connected via the Michigan Air Line trail connecting Lake St Clair to Lake Michigan, but that is a long ways from realization.

I really enjoyed your blog on The KATY Trail. I am hoping to ride it myself in 2018 with various family members.
Any suggestions on preparing to make this ride?
