Buying a chest strap

The 2 guys (Seniors) I regularly ride with always very interested in the HR functions of my Garmin 530. Although they would never buy one for themselves they're always asking me about my HR after we do a big climb or something like that. I know they'd like to see their own HR but they're not really the kind of guys who are interested enough to get one for themselves.

I'd like to buy each of them a chest HR strap as a gift. I was wondering if there are apps they can put on their phones that would record their HR during a ride. I'm not committed to Garmin. If there is a reliable chest strap and and app out their I'd like to get each of them the strap and let them download the app that works best for them.

Polar basically wrote the book on non medical chest straps, you can't go wrong with theirs. They'll pair with nearly anything, including a Garmin. You can't go wrong with them

I like my Wahoo TICKR better than the Garmin chest strap I used to have. More reliable.

Yes there are phone apps that will read HRM data. A google search will turn up several.

If the HRM has Bluetooth it should connect to any of the many phone apps. I have a Bontrager HRM. It connects to the iPhone health app. But it tend to spike to 240 bpm on rides. I also have a Garmin too but I only use it in doors. I stripped the tiny screws.

Second on the Wahoo TickR. Pairs easily and predictably. Way easier to change the battery than my old Polar, but that was many years ago. I did have one konk out after 6 months and Wahoo promptly replaced it, free of charge. Would buy another.

Wahoo TickR (or the TickR X version if you need it to record, example in the Gym)
Straps do wear out, but are replaceable.

My next HRM will be usable for HRV reporting. Wahoo doesn't list that capability for their TickRs. I know the TickR Fit won't measure HRV.

I have a Coospo (yes, really) HRM strap. It cost half of what the name brands cost, and it seems to work flawlessly as far as I can tell. I see Amazon is selling them for $30 presently.
