Hello there!

I have a small gear question for you guys. I've been building up a '10 Jamis Sonik frame for the past month but I'm unable to ride it because I've been missing a small wedge that secures the saddle to the seatpost.

It is a very small piece. I've called Jamis and they've said they can only sell the whole seatpost (which is $139!) - I'm already over-budget and out of money. Do you think I can find this piece somewhere else guys?

I've attached the photo of the piece, granted the photo is from a Felt bike but I guess the binding systems are similar which gives me hope I might be able to find it..

Any help/guidance you can give would be greatly appreciated guys as looking at the bike but not being able to ride it is such a torture right now...

I'd try subbing a Thomson lower assembly. It can easily be had for twenty bucks.

+1. I needed that piece for my Planet X seatpost (and they don't sell spares). Bought the Thomson one direct from their website.

I lost that piece on my Jamis. I went to a local shop that sells a variet of bikes and does alot of repair work, and they had a part available that they could jury rig for me. Got it working in < 10 minutes.

Im going to do a little thread derailing…

I have either the same post or nearly identical on a frame.

I have an issue where the saddle tilts slightly front to back, even when it is tightened down hard on both bolts..

so when you are riding it "clicks" and the nose drops, then when you sit back on the back (no hands around the warm-up circle) it "Clicks" and the tail drops and the nose pops up… very very slight movement.. but its very annoying!

Any one have this issue? any fix?

no.

with a 2 bolt post like the one shown, it must be the saddle and not the post.

A bent saddle rail could do it. I had a similar problem that turned out to be wear on where the rear bolt seats on the post. A washer fixed it for a while until I found a new post.

In addition to using 3 different saddles, all with the same issue-
i got confirmation from the manufacture via the distributor that this is a known issue- and a fix was suggested. The fix sounded a little janky to me- and I'm not in the mood to re-build the frame to just have the exact same issue.. since this is a common post i was hoping to get some more confidence inspiring suggestions from someone who has had and solved the problem..

they suggested inserting a piece of sandpaper between the round piece and the where it connects to the post.. I'm skeptical because in theory with 2 screws tightened its hard to imagine that piece pivoting..

im not looking forward to tearing down my bike to build this one up and test it… but i guess i will soon

To expand on my prior answer. On a similar carbon post the rear bolt was able to shift a bit when the carbon wore down where the bolt head met the post. Putting a washer under the bolt head made thing better by giving the bolt a solid surface. I think the bolt could move allowing the upper saddle rail to move forward and back a bit by sliding on the rails. I think some locktite on the saddle rails might help, but if/when it moves it will be a bigger pop.
Try pulling the saddle forward and back to see if you can get it to pop.

Yeh- im thinking this is along the lines of whats happening. There is nothing to keep the upper piece from sliding forward and back like there is on a Thomson.. there is also some play in the bolts.. so im guessing you are right.. brand new bike and post.. pretty annoying!
