The National Bike Challenge is a free and fun event that begins May 1. In addition to prizes and awards, the data from the Challenge will provide state and national bike advocacy groups with critical support they need to increase funding for bicycle infrastructure improvements in the US.

The pre-season is underway. Join today at www.nationalbikechallenge.org

Hmm. That site seems to be missing a few documents, like the FAQs and the rules.

This project seems to be very discriminitory against those of us who are unemployed. The 5 feet between my bicycle and my desk just isn't going to be prize-winning.

I'm not sure why the FAQ and RULES links are unavailable to you... Those are links to .pdf documents that could take awhile to come up...I have dial-up at home and it takes several (nearly 10) minutes for those to load.

The challenge is very discriminatory to people who drive cars when they should be biking though. It's not just for riding to work...I believe recreational and non work related riding earn points too. I gotta double check that though and with dial up that could take awhile.

This is one reason why I won't join our local cycling association, it seems that somewhere further down the road, they will want to find more uses for my spare time/money than I'd care to give.

Thanks But I really dislike anything that requires me to track any numbers. And I have this dislike of anything that is a competition even if it's lighthearted and meant for fun. My brain is wired weird (or weird wired, hmm). So I decided to pass this when I learned about this the first time. But have fun!

I like commuting even more than that - I like it enough to do it without being offered a prize.

My way I don't have to keep track of anything and I don't have any rules.

I once challenged myself (with a little help from a post here) and went two solid years riding to work every day, despite thunderstorms, deep snow, -25*F temperatures.

If they were really serious they'd start the challenge in October.

Hey ItsJustMe - FYI, we are working on plans for 2013 and one consideration is a year round challenge just as you suggested. Although its just the preseason, MI is in 34th place with 21 riders so far. I like your 2 year challenge - although I am a year round commuter here in Wisconsin, I have not achieved that distinction yet. Good luck to you!

I just joined the challenge today! Rode a quick 6 mile ride to go get my glasses that I left at my fiance's house haha. My new bike (Liberty Gravity 3) comes in the mail on Thursday so I'm pumped to finally have a road bike and not have to ride a MB wherever I go.

Cool, I'll do it. Might as well put my miles to another good use.

P.S. I wish there was a better way to search the site -- it looks like duplicate teams have formed because the existing one wasn't found. ("University of Iowa" vs "The University of Iowa"...)

P.P.S. Artkansas, what browser are you using? I'm using IE7 (at work), and some of the formatting and links are messed up. Might be worth trying a different browser.

Before I learned about the "Advocacy and Safety" forum here, I'd be all over this. But, having read some of A&S, I'm not sure I can support "bike advocacy" anymore. Definitely, I don't want to support people who lobby against bike infrastructure, like MUPs, bike lanes, and things of that nature. Also, I won't support advocating to have cyclists ticketed or arrested. The site you linked to doesn't say anything about what advocacy groups this supports, and without knowing the specifics, I'll pass.

Hi Seattle Forrest - the National Bike Challenge is sponsored by Kimberly-Clark and is a partnership with the League of American Bicyclists, Bikes Belong and Endomondo. Here is a short YouTube video if you want to learn more about the Challenge https://youtu.be/Ogup1v9cnzs. There are now over 2000 riders and all 50 states are represented. See where your state ranks at www.nationalbikechallenge.org I live in Wisconsin and we are currently on top, but I think that could change over the next few weeks as more riders around the country register.
