I have decided to get back in the dirt in 2014 and I have my heart set on a year end leftover from my LBS. I like red and this one should fit the bill just fine. It is a 2013 Haro Flightline 29 Comp.

I'm waiting for a march bonus check to finish getting the stuff to put my '83 Trek 970 road frame back together. Will get a camera and post some pics over in C&V when it gets done. This will be the 1st time in 27 years that I will have owned two bikes. My '86 Trek 500 was also a year end leftover when I bought it.

Well I've been toying with a couple of ideas. A few years ago we, wife and I, sold our 70's pugs as we were moving south and hadn't used them in years. They were our touring bikes back in the day. But.. well you all know life gets in the way and touring gave way to riding on dirt paths. So the pugs were reduced to indoor trainers in the basement. Guess how many times they were used at that point? Fast forward to today, we are living in Fl next to a great 46 mile rail trail. While I love my Giant Escape RX 0 I would love to get my hands on a good old pug again. So the hunt begins….. of course without paying 10X what I paid back in 72.

The other thing in the back of my mind is maybe a used carbon fiber bike as I haven't a drop handle bike for around 25 years or so. It would need to be fairly inexpensive. I've been looking at Bike Island for a while now but nothing has popped yet. The prices they seem to be going for on ebay are too high IMHO and anything that is posted on the local craig's list is either all used up or owned by a pipe dreamer. Any ideas on a good model to look for in the $1k range (used of course)?

No plans, but I have been lusting after a Cannondale Super Six Evo. Heard nothing but good things about them and like the way they look.

I'm sort of the reverse of the OP in that I'm aiming for more road miles next year, so I'm going to build up a fast hybrid from a frame and fork I got off ebay plus parts from my shed. There are a lot of hills where I live so the gears and chainset are mtb stuff. It should cost me about £120 with new tyres, and I'm toying with having the frame powder-coated for £50.

I'm resurrecting my old Porsche mountain bike. When finished it will have period appropriate upper end, but not matching OEM, components.

I have a frame builder friend who has ridden the bike. He calls it "really fun to ride but heavy". It's the most precise steering mountain bike that I've ever ridden due, I assume, to the monster fork. The inner telescoping tubes on the fork are 35 mm diameter. You have to ride this one on a technical trail to appreciate how sloppy most mountain bikes steer.

I just weighed it. My fish scale says 27 pounds. That's not too bad.

I'm scheming to buy the cheapest Walmart fixie I can find at some point. Mostly out of curiosity: is it really more fun to have no gear choices? Will it disintegrate or hold up to a few thousand commuting miles? I guess that's more like N+.5 though.

Well I used to have an older MTB, that I upgraded to the point it didn't fit me anymore. After upgrading the drive train and shifters I got a wild hair and decided to buy some suspension forks. They worked great as long as I was on fire roads and easy trails. But the ks lifted top the tube to the point it was too tall for me. I had built the old one from the frame up using an old Trek 800 Sport steel frame. So this time I want to start with a complete bike with Hydraulic Disk brakes and 29 inch tires. And a hydraulic lockout on the front forks would be nice as well. SO I placed the order today and by the end of next week I hope to be playing in the dirt. Maybe the beginning of next week. Pictures will be forthcoming.

Unfortunately the car seemingly just lost a transmission, so it looks like something is going to happen on that front

I'm getting back to my roots (along with rocks sand and mud) next year also. I tried a 29' er last summer and loved it. But I'm going to have to wait until the move south in 15 months to build one. I bought lugs and a tube set last month to build the frame. I have used a Girvin flex stem and a sprung Brooks saddle as a suspension for the past two decades, I see no reason to change now.

Wrist and shoulder pain caused by hitting a simple road reflector is enough to convince me that dirt riding will never be on my "to do" list. I do; however, have my 45 speed cruiser that I've been meaning to put back on the road so maybe I'll get around to it next year.

I plan on finishing up a drop bar mtb conversion and riding the heck out of it. It's something I wanted to do since I first started looking at the incredibly long thread on BF on this topic. It seems like a large number of posters on BF have tried their hand at this. I've been slowly converting a 1988 stumpjumper comp and can't wait to take it out on gravel roads when the snow and ice retreat a bit.

We'll see if that's true! I'll correct the assembly errors and maybe put a real brake on it if whatever facsimile it has is inadequate ... which reminds me, I probably don't have the tools to remove the freewheel, that's something to research and purchase ahead of time.

If you want to try out a cheap fixie before investing money in anything really nice I just googled "cheap fixie bikes" and came up with quite a few fixed gear setups for under $200.

Mostly in the Temecula to Palm Springs area including Idyllwild . But I have been a roadie for the last five years. So Hurkey Creek. Pachia Trails, Simpson Park and the Goat Trails in Palm springs will be my stomping grounds I think.
